My Route from Shelby,MT to Whitecourt,AB any comments?

Entering Alberta from Shelby, MT, heading on Canada Highway 4 to Lethbridge, picking up Canada Highway 3 to Fort MacCleod where we will hit Canada 2 north to, I think Aldersyde where I will take highw...

While we are talking about routes, I noticed many time in Alberta there will be a highway for example 2, then a 2A or a highway 22 and then a road 22X. Is there some significance how the roads are named and the type of road?
