NC to Lawton OK with Grandson (8yrs)

Grandpaws (me) gets 8 yr old Grandson for much of the summer. Will be just us 2. I want to do a RV fun trip that we'll both remember. The destination will be Ft Sill (Lawton) OK since we have dear friends there. I have no schedule or time constraints. I only like to travel a max of 5 hours a day and much of the time I prefer to stay 2 or 3 nights at each stop. Once I get through NC and into Tennessee on I-40, I prefer decent back roads rather than Interstate.

Would appreciate any suggestions on route (round trip) and things to see that an 8 year old would enjoy. He's interested in almost everything...I cannot think of anything that he doesn't care about.

Thanks in advance!

  • you can stay on base at lake Elmer Thomas Rec http://www.sillmwr.com/letra.htm $18.00 per night about 10 miles from graduation area one other closer http://www.sillmwr.com/ medicine Creek RV park $12.00 closer but not as nice. Have a fun with your SIT if he/she going to transfer you might be able to take him there also.
  • Thanks all! Great suggestions here. Looking forward to seeing these.
  • Just outside Ft Sill is Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge. AWESOME place! Even has an on-site CG. See http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Wichita_Mountains/ 8 year olds of all ages gotta love seeing Bison! ST
  • First stop, Clemmons NC at the county park called. Tanglewood. About 5.5 hours from where you start. Sevierville TN could be a 2nd stop. From there you can go into the Great Smoky Mountains park, Cades Cove, Pigeon Forge (Dollywood) and to Gatlinburg. We like River Plantation RV Park in Sevierville. Maybe Nashville, We liked Two Rivers RV Park. From there you could drop down and take US 64 to Memphis. There's an RV Park south of Memphis we like: E-Z Daze RV Park in Southaven MS. You can take 49/70 over to Little Rock. Stop in Hot Springs AR. Lots to see and do there. Duck boats, gangster museum, etc. From Hot Springs, we take US270 west to US 71 north to Fort Smith. Railroad museum in Forth Smith and ride the old trolley. Stop in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City National Memorial, Cowboy Hall of Fame, Softball museum, 45 Infantry Museum, National Softball Hall of Fame. In Oklahoma City, stay at either Tinker AFB, or we like Twin Fountains RV park, owned by former Marine. My son lives outside Lawton. He was in the Army and never came back to Florida! We go there once or twice a year. We like the Medicine Creek little RV park right on base. There is another larger RV park on Lake Elmer Thomas, but it's a bit too far out of town for our liking. Enjoy your grandson and the trip. Make some great memories!!
  • Thanks Texas for taking the time to do that. Most helpful and will be folded in the trip plan. You came up with some great ideas! I'm retired Army with decals so no problem getting on Post. Will probably stay on post at their RV park.

    Thanks again!
  • well, he's probably going to love the museum at Ft. Sill and if you're going to be there Aug. 2 and know anyone who can get you entry to the base, there's going to be a boot camp graduation ceremony that he would love to see.

going through St. Louis, there is the Arch..he'd like going up in that, and maybe a trip out to the Budweiser Farm to see the big horses. Babler's State Park is in St. Louis if you want to check that out, or lots of folks dry camp in the Casino parking lot on the Illinois side of the river.
Take 67 south out of St. Louis down to around Poplar Bluff. There's a State Park called Johnson's Shut-ins down there, nice park, good swimming.
Then, if you like old timey stuff, head west over toward Branson, MO and maybe find a show your boy would like...all good family entertainment.
Table Rock Lake is just to the south of there and has good camping and fishing.
On south from there, at Eureka Arkansas, is a very good Passion Play put on with live people and animals.
In the Lawton area there will be plenty of Comanche history stuff and and nice wildlife area.
