- slayExplorer IIIf you are concerned about traffic, the best time to arrive is Sunday morning. Stop Saturday night in the Poconos or the Allentown, Pa., area. There is a KOA in both places. If you stay in Allentown, it is a straight shot in on I-78 to the exit for Liberty Harbor. When leaving, again Sunday morning would be best but any day before the afternoon rush hour would work. Don't let the traffic deter you. Liberty Harbor is by far your best location for visiting New York City.
- randesExplorerI looked at Liberty Harbor, but I'm concerned about the traffic in getting there and while leaving. At 75, I'm not quite as quick as I used to be and I sure don't need anything to happen while trying to get there. From what I've seen and heard, traffic in NYC and I'm assuming across the river is just plain crazy. Pulling that 40' 5W is not as easy as my previous shorter 5W.
To RockyRoadCamper, do you know if they have a dog kennel or someone who will walk our dog while we are in the city?
To all of you that responded, thank you so much. I have spent hours researching this location. - RockyRoadCamperExplorerYou cannot beat Liberty Harbor. Follow the directions and do not drive there during morning rush hours. We have been there 15 times. Much closer than any other park, esp. Newburg.
- slayExplorer IIIf you don't want to drive into Jersey City to use Liberty Harbor, the closest RV park west of New York is Fla-Net off exit 27 of I-80 outside Netcong. There is a train station a few miles away where you can get a ride into the city. North Jersey is just not condusive to RV camping. If your objective is to see the sights in New York City, and you want to stay in New Jersey, Liberty Harbor is your best option. You will save a lot of time getting in and out of the city by being just across the river.
- LumptyExplorerI was going to recommend Mahlon Dickerson Reservation as well. Also, check out Turkey Swamp Park to the south in Monmouth County. It has a larger campground in the same type of county park facility.
- alfredmayExplorerMahlon Dickerson Reservation (A County Park) in Morris County NJ may be what you want. It is 15 miles from the junction of State Road 15 and Interstate 80 in Jefferson, NJ. Read the reviews below. Call the park to see if your rig will fit. The park is 50 miles from the George Wahington Bridge which puts you on the northern tip of Manhattan Island

http://www.morrisparks.net/aspparks/mahlonmain.asp - PapPappyExplorerThe closest park is the parking lot (aka campground)Liberty Harbor RV in Jersey City, which is walking distance to the PATH train into NYC. Since most people go to visit NYC, and not sit around their RV when there, it's a pretty good deal, though I'd imagine in mid-Summer, it's pretty hot there. Still, once you're parked, you're pretty much done.
Another option is one of the more scenic parks up the Hudson River...I believe there is one near Newburgh, and you can take the train down to the city. Newburgh KOA
