If you are going to be in the Aztec-Mesa Verde area in the spring and you like archeology, there are two places not to be missed. One is Chimney Rock, one of our newest national monuments, that was a solar observatory for the Anasazi. The spectacular mountaintop ruin is located on a paved road between Aztec and Pagosa Springs that passes right by Navajo Lake. If you could arrange to be there on the vernal equinox, you would get a sunrise tour that you would remember for a long time. Just bring a ski parka!
The other not-to-miss site is the BLM's little-known Anasazi Heritage Center just west of Dolores, CO. It has a collection second to none acquired from "digs" in the 1970s for McPhee Dam and reservoir. BLM also manages the adjacent Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, which is located just off the shortest route from Moab to Mesa Verde.
BTW, I am a retired geological engineer. My wife and I were fortunate to have had jobs that allowed us to travel all over Colorado (actually all over the U.S. for me) during every season of the year. So, if you need info on specific Colorado geological or historical sites of interest to you, PM me.
