New York to Williamsburg VA

I called the Chesepeka Tunnel authority. The height limit is 13"6 but the tunnels are higher than that. They just don't allow anything over 13"6

Do you use deisel? Some of the Royal Farms stations on the Va. eastern shore have separate deisel pumps that you should be able to get into easily. One is at the Va.-Md. border and another is just north of Onley. If not, there are some gas stations with room to manuever, just not that many. How many miles can you get on a tank of gas? You might want to fill up at the Flying J in Carneys Point, N.J. before crossing into Delaware.

Be aware the tunnels at the bridge are marked as having a 13'6" clearence. Tractor-trailers go through all the time but I am not sure just how tall they are. An alternative is to take Rt. 301 in Delaware, cross the Bay near Annapolis and continue on 301 through Bowie and Waldorf into Virginia. Then you can either turn south on Rt. 17 and end up around Yorktown or go over to 95. You will be between Fredericksburg and Richmond. (there is another Flying J when you get to 95). Then you just have to get around Richmond and run down 64 to Williamsburg. You avoid Baltimore and Washington but be aware the traffic on 301, with all the traffic lights, can be just as brutal.

I-95 will be a mess this Saturday especially in the DC/ Virginia border area. Been there done that during holiday travels. Done the 13 route before to Virginia beach. Figured I would do it again to avoid the mess. I also take the same route to go to Ocean City Maryland. Taking 95 to Williamsburg Virginia with no traffic is 7 hours from my house. Taking route 13 via the Bay Bridge Tunnel is 7:45 and usually no traffic. I looked up the interstate 81 to 64 route and was close to 9 hours and 100 miles more traveled. Just don't remember about fueling stations along U.S. 13/113. I will stop at the end of the NJ turnpike and fill up but don't think I can make it all the way to Williamsburg without having to refuel.

If you were further south in NJ, then the Delmarva route to the bridge-tunnel would make sense. Otherwise, it's a long slog down, and you've got to get the NJ Pike in there somewhere (UGH). I've taken the I80-I81 route, but picked up US 50 in Winchester to US 17 to re-connect to I95 just north of Fredricksburg. The US50/US17 part is very picturesque.

If you live on L.I. traffic will be your lease worry LOL

Just in case you aren't already aware - at the toll booth for the bridge/tunnel you will be asked to turn off the propane. Also, the bridge is closed to high profile vehicles on days with strong winds (see here). There is a parking area adjacent to the toll booths for such vehicles to wait out the winds.

Another route is to take I-80 from the GWB to I-81, then run that south to I-64, then East into Williamsburgh. It looks out of the way on the map since it takes you farther West, but timewise is better since that 13 thru Delaware is no hi-speed interstate.

The tunnels are gonna be tight! Check with them first. Trucks use that route, so its probably OK, Have not noticed any shortage of services that way, but plan ahead and stop for gas and such before you get tight.
