I also say just do a west coast trip this time. Then if you like it, take an east coast trip next time. There is so much to see and do on the west coast that even a month won't cover it all.
For planning I use www.googlemaps.com. Put in starting point then ending point then add destinations depending on how long you want to drive. We limit our driving to 5 hours a day, or about 350 miles. Once you determine the stops, find a city there and look for campgrounds on www.woodalls.com. Note 2 or 3 options based on reviews then read the reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com to make the final pick. Another site you can find campground bargains is www.recreation.gov for Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Land Management campgrounds. You shouldn't have to make reservations unless it's Friday or Saturday night or a holiday or a very popular tourist destination like Yellowstone. We usually call ahead to make sure they have a spot and arrive early (4pm). Don't try to arrive after dark! Are you going to tow a car? If not you will be limited on where you can drive and park.
