OK, so new plan:
We've already been to Grand Canyon, Bryce & Zion so lets skip Utah.
Start in SF
Up Oregon hitting Crater Lake and St Helen
Glacier
Yellowstone/Teton
Devils Tower
Rushmore
Back through???
I'm still kinda clueless on how to plan this all and keep track of all the dates.
For example, say I start out from San Francisco on the morning of Jul 1st. How long should I drive the first day as first time RV driver in a 30' A class? Should I just stay the night and keep going in the morning or do I spend a day somewhere?
Also, how do the bigger parks handle RV's? If I camp at an RV park outside of Yellowstone, do I drive into the park or take shuttles? Is there parking for RV's in the parks etc'
It's a very daunting task to plan this thing. I'm starting to panic :)
I think this is more enjoyable plan. Head up the coast and enjoy Oregon Coast to Washington then over through Idaho to Glacier for a couple of days back down to Yellowstone for 3-4 days (and, yes, you can see a lot in 3 days), a day or two in the Grand Tetons, then head south to the Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Colorado area on the "Million Dollar Highway' for 5 more days (Be sure to ride the train from Silverton to Durango) then down through Chama and Santa Fe area. From there go south and through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and camp near Silver City in the City of Rocks State Park and over to Sedona, Arizona coming home through Yosemite.
I suggest when you are going through an area that has no attractions (such as, between Tetons and southern Colorado that you use this as a "driving day" and just try to put lots of miles in that day until late at night then stop at Walmart, Cracker Barrel or other rest areas (make sure they are RV friendly)to get some sleep, then head out for destination again next morning.
Even staying in the West this will be a fast paced trip. I can't think the first one would even be doable, but staying in the
West will be a great family trip. RV road trips are great but you must plan for the unexpected....Have a great time!
