Newburgh, NY to Hershey, PA

Thanks for all the advice so far. We are fine tuning our route south to VA. So from Newburgh, NY to Hershey, PA is over 3 hours driving 84 to 81; is this accurate and would you drive straight through? We have never driven the route and this will be our first trip with the fiver. We are seeing different opinions on the road conditions.

We are trying to stay with the 2/2/2 rule. We will be 3 days in Hershey. Any rec's for a CG somewhat near the Hershey museum. Would like to spend a day seeing Amish sites as we have never been in this area of the country.

Thank you for all your advice, it is appreciated.
  • Thank you all so much! Hopefully we will be able to contribute as much when we get going.

Just a heads up - there is a section of 1 lane construction right now on 84 west of Port Jervis ( NY Exit 1). There are often delays during heavy traffic times. But overall not a bad route at all.

Yes, and it will be 1 lane for quite some time. The bridges for both east- and west-bound I-84 are being rebuilt. I-84 to I-81 is, however, the most direct route. From Milford, PA I frequently like to take Rt. 209 through the Delaware Water Gap Nat'l Recreation Area. This is a nice drive if you're not in a hurry. The only problem with this route is when you get to the Allentown-Bethlehem area via Rt. 33 your choices are Rt. 22 west, which is frequently backed up, or I-78 west. I-78 is a bit longer, has a bit of a grade after you've crossed the Lehigh River (it's short, though) and a high volume of truck traffic. Your dilemma is "no good way to get there from here." Welcome to PA - construction ALWAYS in progress!!!
  • We just spent the Labor Day weekend at Hersheypark Camping Resort. Made reservations about one month before, don't know what they might have available for your trip. Nice shuttle is free from the CG to the Amusement Park. Water park features closed after Labor Day, but the other rides might be worth your visit, if that's your cup of tea.
