Newfie helpfulness

The people of Newfoundland are amazing. The roads got the better of our trailer & broke 2 springs. How that happened I do not know since 2 years ago I upgraded my spring packs from a 6 leaf to a 7. Thought I was good to go.

Lucky us, the damage was discovered when we had stopped in a CG & before the whole thing fell apart. The big problem was finding the parts & fixing it.

In steps one of the people from the Deer Lake Municipal CG who, upon seeing the trailer jacked up makes it his mission to help & spends almost a whole day helping to get what needs to be removed off & on the phone sourcing parts.

Truly amazing. Don't know where we would be without the assistance. Hate to think what the delay would be or the cost.

Can't let such a good deed go without mention & appreciation.

  • Icebergs have been good. Did a tour out of St Anthony & another out of Twillingate. More seen out of Twillingate. More RVs being seen on the TCH so summer must finally be arriving.
  • We just came back and they were streaming in.

Saw the egg campers going over but really didn't see any other campers that were not newfoundlanders (we boondocks most all the time).

This was a BANNER year for icebergs (no exaggeration)...a berg in every cove anywhere in the north...really!

Gas WAS cheap until the government jacked it about 16 cents per liter a week or two before our return...argh! Exchange rate is good.

    Weather was cool...love that.

  • Are you seeing icebergs? That would be a great bonus for heading there while it's still cool.

My Facebook friend Beverly Shea (ever since we stayed at the town's Island Cove RV park she manages in La Scie on the Baie Verte Peninsula) has been posting lots of photos of icebergs - she collects the bergy bits that come close to their rocky beach and puts them in her freezer.
  • Met the Egg collection at the Viking CG. So far most is what was expected except the weather has been on the cool side & we seem to be well ahead of the summer traveling rush. No problems with no reservations anywhere. The crowds can't be too far behind headed this way.
  • While you're there, don't miss the Gander aviation museum. Interesting exhibits but the best part is the story of how Newfoundlanders took in thousands of passengers when multiple aircraft were grounded on that small island on 9/11.

My mother-in-law was born in Newfoundland and our trip there in 2012 was unforgettable. Generous and loving folks indeed.
  • Hey Veebyes - sorry to hear of your trouble - glad you found some helpful folks to get you back on the road! How has the trip been otherwise? ST
  • I know of a half-dozen couples who are currently caravanning through NL with their little fiberglass 'egg' trailers. They have been writing on another forum the same sort of comments about how kind and generous the people of Newfoundland are. Inviting the travelers into their homes, feeding them, giving them things, inviting them to informal, fun get-togethers with the locals, and so on. I looked up the demographics and thought it noteworthy that NL has a population of just 508,000 people, and more than 490,000 of those say they're Christians. I think they have taken the Golden Rule to heart and are living their faith.
