Newfoundland music

I posted on here a little while ago about Newfoundland tourism. For those that are willing to make the trip here is a sampling if our local music.

Here is Shanneygannock. It is a local popular band.

Here is a wider sampling of our local music.
Newfoundland Music

Often the songs are similar to traditional Irish music. Hope you enjoy it.
  • In May we are going to the Trails, Tales and Tunes festival at Norris Point in Gros Morne. http://www.trailstalestunes.ca/ Do you have any recommendations on which performers are "must sees"?
  • Love that kind of music. Any websites for festivals anywhere in the Maritimes?
  • Go to what you can.

in PEI in June, 9 -22 '14. I've done same for Festival of Small Halls I've driven as much as 2 hours from my sleeping HQ.

There are excellent festivals all over Atlantic Canada, starting with East Coast Music Association, which just had it's 2014 main event.

I don't know about any specific festival websites but the ones I know of, not necessarily have been to are the following:( not necessarily in order)
Brigus Blueberry festival- usually around second week in August
Cupids Soirée- the weekend after Brigus
Lewisporte Mussel bed Soirée- this is usually around the same weekend as Brigus
Grand Falls/Windsor- Salmon festival, usually near the end of July
Fogo Isalnd also has an art festival- not sure of the dates though. Fogo and Twilingate are alo known for their icebergs in early summer. They are part of an area known as Iceberg Alley.

Outside of Newfoundland check out the Cavendish beach festival in PEI.

I know of a few people who spend all summer travelling around Newfoundalnd just visiting local festivals. Many are small local affairs but still do a good job organizing.

The Salmon Fest usually has really big names. last year they had the Eagles as headliners, the year before was KISS.

If you want to visit find out where you want to go, then google the town. The local Fest will usually be listed what dates it will be.

Anyone wishing to come to view icebergs look up Iceberg Alley. There is a map and a gallery of past icebergs, on the iceberg finder website.
  • When we went to Newfoundland by ferry there was a performer in the ferrys café who was doing Newfie songs. We really enjoyed it and was looking forward to the same on the return trip, but NO it was Jimmy Buffett music this time. We were very disappointed. I like Buffett but that's about all we get here at home in the Keys.
  • Bobsinn,

Any time you want to listen to Newfie music just look for it on youtube. The links above are only a couple of samples. There are many others to look for. Also try, Simani, The Navigators, Masterless Men, Bob Porter, Kevin Collins.

For those that like to stream their music and would like to hear a greater variety, check out Jigs & Reels on OZ-FM. It starts at 8:00.

Or check out potluck on KIXX Country on Sunday afternoon. This one starts at 1:00.

Just remember that we are a little bit ahead in time. At least an hour and half ahead of New York.
