Nor Cal to Flagstaff, AZ

I am planning a trip from Nor Cal to the Springfield, MO area next week. My goal is to make Flagstaff, AZ the first night.

Google Maps has the route into Nevada and down Hwy 95 about 30 miles shorter, but 10 minutes longer compared with traveling down Hwy 99 and starting east at Bakersfield.

Does anyone have preferences over either route? I've taken Hwy 99 south many times to LA, but don't know the roads once leaving 99.

Also, any recommendations for an RV park near Flagstaff? I will be pulling a 28'TT, and traveling alone.

Thanks for any thoughts and insights!
  • I have done both ways many times and my preference is US95 through NV.
I have stayed at the KOA and J&H in Flagstaff. I would not go back to the KOA it is was very tight, sites had so much slope that my front bumper was in the dirt and my rear tires were off the ground, and the personnel were rude. Keep in mind that Flagstaff is at 7000 feet.
  • I have friends that take Hwy 95 in NV every year between WA and AZ. They've tried all the different routes and it is their preferred route. Ditto TexasShadow that Hwy 58 is fine too. Just note you will go over Tehachapi pass, but no problem there.

I'd look at RVParkReviews.com for Flagstaff. If you don't need hookups and you don't mind driving about 15 miles off I-40, I recommend Bonito Campground at Sunset Crater Nat'l Monument. Or closer in w/o hookups is Fort Tuthill County Park. I've never stayed at any of the private campgrounds in Flagstaff.
  • personally, I'd take Nevada 95 over CA 99 any day unless it was snowing like crazy up on Donner Pass. Less traffic, less stress.
but if you decide on 99, there's nothing wrong with CA 58 over to Barstow.
There's a couple truck stops at Barstow just south of where you turn north to get to I 40. About 1 mile south.
