North Dakota road trip?

I'm at wits end with Michigan and it's never ending rain and cold weather. Looking at the balmy upper 70s to mid 80s in North Dakota right now and thinking, maybe a 10-day road trip is in order to get some warmth in my bones.

Thinking this route roughly:

  • US 2 West out of Michigan to Duluth
  • US 10 West from Duluth to Fargo and Bismarck
  • Follow the Missouri toward Williston
  • Turn around at Williston and head towards Minot (US 2 or something else?)
  • US 2 East from Minot toward Grand Forks and then back to Duluth and home

Thoughts, advice, things to see?

Nice state park at Devil's Lake. There is a Casino that has an RV park--but it is not free. Rugby, ND is near the geographic center of North America.

Devils Lake has been overflowing its banks for many years.

There is not much of note in the area, that I am aware of.

It looks neat on the map, haven't researched a lot yet.

  • Scaling back a bit, looking a trip to the Devil's Lakes area, and back.

    Haven't completely given up yet.

Thanks to everyone for the tips!
  • Doesn't look like it's possible in my time frame unless I want several very long driving days there and back.

I think I'm stuck in Michigan this year.

East of Williston, check out Lewis and Clark SP.

Oops yeah, that's the one. I've actually stayed at both.
  • The Missouri River crossing on I90 in S Dakota is somewhat memorable, with a L&C museum and some grades (and COE campground). I don't recall much from the I94 crossing. The Teddy Roosevelt Nat Park further west felt like the first view of the 'West'. Otherwise my memories of I94 are of a cross wind, and long days covering the whole state in one day. The west end of US2 used to be busy with limited camping due the oil boom. I remember Grand Forks mainly for the flat, sugar beets, and warm buggy summers (I spent several summer school sessions as UND).
