North Phoenix to Usery Mountain during rush hour?

Question

Will be headed to Usery Mountain campground this weekend from far North Phoenix near I-17 and Loop 101. Will have to drive during afternoon rush hour. Loop 101 southbound and 202 east bound I've heard is very slow during afternoon rush.

Would heading east on Shea blvd. to 87 to Bush Highway to Usery an alternative. Looks about 10 miles further but if traffic is lighter might be worth it. How is Bush highway for RV's from 87, past Saguaro Lake and on to Usery?

I would take the 101 East to the 202 East to McDowell Rd East. Sure, you'll have some traffic at that time of day, but personally I wouldn't go 10 miles out of my way.

Definitely don't take I17 South to the 202 East.

You'll have traffic on 101 but when you get on 202 (Red Mountain Hwy) it thins dramatically.  202 is a pretty drive for a freeway. :)
