A few more tips: both Sigalert.com and google maps offer real-time traffic info -- they sometimes differ from each other, but it is worth a last minute check before deciding on a route. And if you have a savvy navigator riding shotgun, that person can look on a smartphone and call an audible (as they say in football) so that you can jig and jog and take alternate routes as needed.
Try to travel in the predawn hours -- that is the only uncrowded time here.
Listen to KNX 1070 am radio on the 5s -- 1:05, 1:15, etc. They often have last minute info from the CHP or Cal Trans that does not show up on Sigalert or Google Maps for another ten minutes.
