Nova Scotia to Dunedin, Florida

Can we really do this? Am I crazy to think that we can pack up our 36' Cedar Creek and head out just before Christmas to Florida for 9 weeks, returning the last week of February??? It seems a daunting task, and so very far to travel.
We are new to RV'ing, late 40's, and find ourselves with time off in the darkest part of winter. It's an idea in our heads right now, but it seems a monumental task. I picture ourselves hauling the beast back in horrific snowstorms. Ok, I'm a little freaked out by it. I want to do this, but where do I begin? People do this all the time....right??

  • Flawed thinking.

Did the Christmas to the last week of Feb last year. Big mistake, came home to a cold foreign white substance.

So we smartened up this year. Christmas to the end of March. STILL had that STUFF show up.

Time out, gotta rethink the whole thing.

Yes you can, in fact 1000's of 'snowbirds' do it annually for varying lengths of time. The biggest problem you may encounter is weather conditions anywhere north of Georgia.
Watch the long range forecast before heading out, either sb or nb. I would suggest allowing at least a week between the date you want to leave and your reservations. Safer to stay a night or 2 OFF the road somewhere than risk driving in bad conditions.

  • Dunedin RV Park. It's a Carefree Park, and I had to find a spot I could walk/bike to everywhere like beach, grocery and drug stores as I will be on my own with no vehicle for several weeks in the middle of the trip.

  • What park in Dunedin?

Just curious as I am staying in Ft. Desoto in a month and wondering what other parks there are out there.
  • From where I am in Nova Scotia, it's just faster and easier to drive to Maine, but I'm certainly glad the ferry is back running again for the town of Yarmouth.
I do have reservations in Dunedin. And I love the idea of the Pinellas Trail, sounds like a great way to get some exercise! Food talk? Always! We are foodies and enjoy trying new places/things.
It seems a heck of a drive though...but we certainly want to get away from here and spend our time off somewhere warm and sunny!

  • You DO have reservations in Dunedin don't you? Let me know if you want info about the good food places around there. We go there every January for a week of biking the Pinelas Trail.
  • Just found this... can't wait to try it out, maybe this summer.... Maybe its something to consider for your trip.

The new ferry that will connect Maine to Nova Scotia has arrived in Portland! Story here >> http://bit.ly/1gLWfrk
  • I'd just go for it! Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Snow and bad weather usually impacts the day of and the day after the storm. You can always sit out the bad days in the rig or a motel.

I've hauled my rig through some of the worst winter weather and the DOT boys have always had the roads passable. The trips would take a little longer, but still doable.
