Ohio E-ZPass &towing

I have searched on this forum and the Ohio Turnpike Website and I am still not clear about this.
We often travel the Ohio Turnpike, but towing and not towing. Can I use an E-ZPass that works for both circumstances?
If I can how do I do this?
I have seen mention of different transponders (blue), but that was in another state.
I would like to hear from E-ZPass users who purchased in Ohio.

Careful - On occasion NY will audit the toll both cameras. If they find you went through a toll booth with a trailer and paid a single-unit toll they'll run you plate and mail you a violation along with a fine.

  • I'd call Ohio E-Z Pass and ask them directly.
I'm in NY and have 2 transponders (white and blue) for whether I'm towing or not.
But on the Mass Pike I was told I could use the white transponder since they count the axles and figure the toll that way.
  • I realize I'm not in Ohio...but...We have 2 transponders (EZPass), 1 for car only and 1 for car and motorhome. Mass. EZPass told us if we ever travel without car being towed it just takes a phone call to change profile. We have had disputes about tolls and EZPass has corrected without hesitation...best way to travel toll roads; 50 mile an hour highspeed tolls is FANTASTIC; almost don't mind the toll. Almost. We have used our transponders in Ohio without issue.
  • I called EZ Pass and they modified our profile so that it knew we were travelling in an RV with a toad. not sure about it automatically detecting this at the gate. We love EZ Pass and it works almost everywhere East.

Now I am in Texas (From MN) and it doesn't work in Kansas or Oklahoma.
  • Check out Mass. They will send you one for free. I first got one for the truck, then added the fiver and they sent a second unit. Now you just use whatever one you need. And Ohio will still give you the discount. When you setup the account they put $20 on it and replenish as needed from your account. Sweet deal.

Note: make sure the second unit is put away so it doesn't register both. I keep mine in foil.

  • We have IPass that works like EZ Pass so we blow thru the gates without stopping.
I am told that the `system' counts axles so you can use the same transponder when towing or not towing. This is what we recently did on a cross country trip towing.
