We are New Yorkers about to take possession of our first motorhome. Yippee! We have an E-ZPass tag on each of our cars and love the convenience. So, now the question is, how does it work with an RV? Do they have special E-ZPass tags for RVs? What do you do if you are towing a car, does it include the toad? I poked around on the NYS E-ZPass page and didn't see any information there. I did see on the forums some people complaining that the mylar bags that are supposed to keep E-ZPass tags from being read sometimes don't work. Has anyone found a sure fire solution for that?Thanks. Print out this form, fill it out and send it in with a copy of your registration to get a motorhome tag that qualifies you for the NYS Thruway motorhome plan. You'll be charged the same per axle rate as passenger cars on the NYS Thruway. Other states don't all extend any discount for it, but a couple of them seem to. I haven't had any problems with the toad tag tucked away in the mylar bag in the glove box, but you could also wrap it in aluminum foil for more shielding.

I'm on it! So, if I read this right, my RV with a towed vehicle are both covered by the E-ZPass tag in the RV. And the rate for the RV/Towed car combination is the same as a normal passenger car?

Sure is news to me. I've been using an E-ZPass with my 32 ft class C with dual rears for over a year now in NJ. Been all over NJ, NY, NH, MD, PA, CT with zero issues.

Do you get charged passenger car rates for your motorhome? If your tag is not registered for the correct vehicle type, they likely will charge the higher rate.

Thanks for all the good input.

Call the E-ZPass folks after you get your "toad in tow tag" for the motorhome and ask for separate "non-towing" motorhome plan tag. That's what we have, although we seldom use the non-towing one.

agree with Old Biscuit. We towed all through the NE with an Illinois IPass and it worked perfectly. 2 transponders, one in RV, one shielded in toad until we needed it. You can move one transponders back and forth but afraid we would forget it.

When I had a motorhome I was told just run the transponder assigned to the RV (but I used the transponder from my truck in the same weight class), the toad or trailer would be counted per axle, if I was not towing anything I would pay the standard 2 axle car rate. As for axle counting, it did work but most of the time I only got charged the car rate no matter what I was doing.

Follow up question. What do you do when you are using just the RV and are not pulling a toad? Do you need a different E-ZPass?
