Ohio to South Carolina

Hello Everyone! We're heading to Hunting Island in South Carolina in August from Ohio and would like to have some input on our travel choice. We plan on traveling St Rt 35 to I-64 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95. My question is overall opinions but mainly I-64 & I-77? Are they straight through roadways? Thank you!
  • Once you get on 77 it's a straight shot to 26 with the exception of Charoltte but you can take 485 around it. When you get to hunting island be very very careful going over the narrow bridge.
  • I don't know where you are located in Ohio, but you might want to take Rt 23 south until it turns into I-26. It's all 4-lane highway, mostly limited access. It is hilly, but you have to get across all the mountains to get to the ocean, no matter which way you go.

If you do travel this way, take the bypass around Ashland, KY; but head straight down, then it's a straight shot to the TN border, where it turns into I-26. Down through NC and then SC until you intersect I-95. Another 60 miles or so on I-95 until you exit into Beaufort.
  • You'll notice that there are several suggestions because we don't know where in Ohio you're starting from. Don't need a street address - just a city or town. Kinda like asking how long a rope is if you can only see one end of it.

We live around Findlay and when we go to SC we take 23 and 70/71 through Columbus then 35-64 at Charleston and pick up 77. Going that way depending on how far you want to go, We stay overnight at Fort Chiswell RV Park which is east of Wytheville Va. That is about 350 miles. Not bad driving but time yourself so you don't hit rush hour. Been that way 4-5 times going both ways. We have friends South of Greenville, SC. If I remember right the only real pull is Fancy Gap and that is south of Wytheville.

Good Luck and have a great time. Hopefully we will be heading that direction in a couple of weeks.
  • When I lived in Jamestown, Ohio travelling to Charleston, I found that Camp Creek West Virginia state park at Exit 20 worked very well. Several pull thrus, electric only but convenient central water points. Only a mile or so off I 77, but in a valley that reduced through highway noise. A 5 foot waterfall up the walking trail 1/4 mile. Even saw evidence (track) of bear.
  • Ok, we're about a couple weeks out for our trip (Yay!) and I wanted to clear up for myself my original question! I re-read my question and what I guess I was trying to originally ask is, on these highways I mentioned, are these highways straight through meaning they do not have any stop lights on them? Some highways still have stop and go lights that slow you down and we want to avoid them if possible! I know some of you who answered already probably figured that out but I just wanted to make sure for myself since we are going to be finalizing our trip route very soon. Thanks again!!!! :)
  • All the interstates have NO stoplights, but Rt 23 will have stop lights, and some 35 mph sections. I 64 and 77 has tolls.
