Omaha NE to Colorado Springs

We are picking up our new travel trailer in Omaha on Thursday. Google Map suggested taking I-80/I-76/I-25 through Denver to get back. I really can't find any place along the route worth stopping for. Anyone have suggestions for place to stop along the way, or another route? We have two days to get back.
  • North Platte or Ogallala. There are a few places along the way. There is a lake 5 miles south of North Platte that has inexpensive dry camping and beautiful lake.
  • Depends on what you've seen and what your interests are. The pioneer exhibit in the overpass near Kearney is pretty neat. Ft. Kearney State Historic Park is too. Not sure if the nearby state park (same name) is still open for camping, though.

There is the railroad switching yard in North Platte that is interesting and a state recreation campground nearby ( Buffalo Bill's Ranch).
Cabelas in Sydney has shopping and a campground.
  • Between Omaha and Lincoln, the US Air Force has it's Strategic Air Command museum. Just walking in the door, you are greeted by an SR-71!

I didn't like the arch at Kearney, but that's me.

If you stay on the interstate, you might like the Pony Express Museum in Gothenburg.

If you go through North Platte, the Buffalo Bill Historic Ranch on the north edge of town is interesting. Be sure not to miss the rifle stock shaped barn rafters!

You could detour from I-76 and drive through Pawnee National Grassland west of Sterling, CO.

If it was me, I'd get off the interstate...

At Beatrice, you can visit Homestead National Monument.

Minden Nebraska has a great attraction... Pioneer Village Plan on a few hours.

The "most scenic lake in Nebraska" is located north of Cambridge (on US 6 & 34) a few miles. The Medicine Creek State Recreation area would be a nice place for the night. Almost all small Nebraska towns have RV hookups at a bargain if not free.

Depending on your tow vehicle, perhaps a stop in LaJunta would be in order to see the dinosaur tracks... Dinosaur Tracks in Comanche National Grasslands Picketwire Canyon

There is lots to see along the routes back to Colorado... have a great trip!

Only used that route a few times - As the road was rough and the trucks were many - but we had a few great stops in Reservoirs with camp grounds and local county and State parks. We never spent much time looking at sights as we were headed to the Rockies and Colorado.

    Best of Luck,
  • Personally, I'd take I-80 to NE 10 south to Minden and spend the night at Pioneer Village. Cool museum. Then work you way down to I-70 to US 24 into the Springs. That avoids Denver traffic and the mess that sometimes happens on I-25 between Denver and Co Spgs. Plus, I think I-70 is a little better road surface than I-80.
