Ontario, Canada to Indianola, Iowa

I will be travelling to Indianola Iowa in a couple of weeks and wanted to know opinions on the best route to take, Will be leaving on a Wednesday and hoping to arrive on Friday. The first night we plan to stop over at a Walmart and/or Cracker Barrel and would like to camp Thursday night close to our destination so we don't have a long drive on Friday. Would like to stop and do some shopping on the way if there are any shopping centre along the way.

I heard that Ohio rest centres have hydro/water hook up sites for one night stop overs are there anything similar on the route to Indianola (I realize Ohio is not on our way).

Thanks in advance.
  • Yes which crossing, and how long a drive to get to that crossing, what part of Ontario.
S.S.Marie and then north and west of Lake Michigan, missing Chicago
or Sarnia/Port Huron or Windsor/Detroit and go through Chicago but if your coming through Toronto, not much of a problem.

For a quick overnight stop, we avoid being close to any major city, whether it be Walmart, rest area or truck stop.

As for hookups in any rest stop, we have never seen them, some states and Ontario Enroute Centres have had dump stations and non-potable water, but many of those are being closed up.

Camping close to Indianola, check out KOA, they have several campgrounds between Chicago and Indianola

  • Oops I will be coming from just west of Toronto it is roughly 5 hour drive to border (Detroit). I thought Detroit border would be the better crossing (as opposed to Niagara area)

    Thanks
  • I would recommend crossing at Sarnia, then taking I-69 to Lansing, Then I-69 to I-94 and west.
We have relatives in London Canada. We live in central Tennessee, so we head north and pick up I-69 in Indianapolis and use the Sarnia route.
You will accomplish two things that way. In Windsor you will have to travel a lot of city streets to get to border crossing and you avoid Detroit entirely.
