Orange County CA to Zion Ponderosa UT

Most of our family camping is local, within 2 hours or so. This summer taking a trip to Zion in Early June to Ponderosa Ranch for a week. Any suggestions on what to do and not to do? Plan on staying one night in Vegas maybe at Circus Circus or? and drive the 15 to St George and take the 9 through Zion to the ranch. Going to the animal sanctuary in Kanab for a day as well. Looking forward to feedback.
  • You'll love Best Friends Animal Sancturary. Plus, it's in a gorgeous area. Since you're staying a week at Ponderosa, you might want to take a day to drive to Bryce National Park. It's completely different from Zion. Hiking down a trail will give you an altogether different prospective than staying at the top. Wall Street Trail is awesome! Have a good vacation!
  • If you have bikes, bring them to Zion -- you can ride up and down the whole canyon with no cars, and the buses are very courteous. It is like riding in an Imax movie:

  • The Oasis RV park in Vegas is an easy on and off I-15 south of the strip. Depending on the point in your trip you plan to go to Best Friends in Kanab, they have two campsites on the property. You might consider taking the route through Hurricane, Freedonia and Kanab first and stay at Best Friends one night if they have an opening. That would also put you on the east side of the tunnel and not have to deal with the tunnel. Not a bad drive, only one long grade not too far after you get off 15.

A word about Best Friends, they accept and like volunteers if that's what you have in mind. They have a mandatory orientation for some of the areas that require you attend an orientation/training session before you can volunteer. So unless you just want to see the gift shop and main building call first and ask questions. We volunteered several times a few years ago and were planning to volunteer a couple days two years ago and found out about the orientation/training requirement after we arrived.
