Oregon 22

We'll be heading to McMinnville from Pacific City and hwy 130 seems to be closed to thru traffic, sooo it looks as if the shortest route is up to Hebo and take 22. That section of 22 is one of the few roads east to west that I haven't taken and I'm wondering how it is for a 40'mh towing. We came over this time on 6 from Banks.

Actually were thinking about going there again. My stepson loves the Spruce Goose and I just love the old planes. One of my favorite sights was the B-17 parked next to the F-105 Thunderchief and reading the difference in payloads. We also have to catch up on some of my favorite wineries and hit Nicks Italian Restaurant
I do remember that 130 is pretty twisty, but 22 looked better on the map.
Amandasgrandma, did you or do you still raise Cocker Spaniels?
Must've been someone else...never raised dogs.:)
  • Highway 22 is okay. I travel it often, as I live near Hebo and it is fine. I take my 40' mh pulling my race car in a 24' enclosed trailer to Woodburn via Highway 22 and as long as you take it easy you will be just fine. Bicyclist really only use that route during the Reach the Beach charity event which has already taken place this year.

I would recommend turning right at the Catholic church in Grand Rhonde to go over to highway 18. It is much easier than going all the way to Valley Junction to get on highway 18.

  • As mentioned, very crooked!! Another negative (esp on weekends) is lots of bicycle traffic. Occasional races, and they don't shut down the hwy!! Friends live outside of Valley Junction, and more than once have almost taken out riders on the curves. Something to watch out for.

  • We wouldn't take it. It's pretty darn twisty. I don't even like driving it in a car.....and I lived in Salem for 30 yrs. We always took Hwy 101 south toward Lincoln City and then Hwy 18 to McMinnville. It adds about 20 miles to the route but a MUCH easier drive.....
  • are you going to McMinnville to see the Evergreen Air and Space museum, by chance? The founder died last year and the place has had financial problems... getting reorganized but some of the planes and such are gone ... just wanted you to know that so you could check it out further.

As far as the road.. I have not gone that way in at least four years so i don't want to comment on the road.
