- Wild_CardExplorerJust so happens I am from Lancaster and I live in Kitty Hawk.
I frequent this trip 3/5 times a year as I have family at the MD line off 83 as well as in Lancaster.
I prefer 301sout out of Baltimore to 17 S in Port Royal then 64, 664 around Norfolk and Chesapeake to 168 south. I usually come out rt 1 south of the conowingo and 695 around the city, 97 south to 50 west to 301.
896 over to 13 south is the fastest route but my got the stop and go, speed traps and the toll at the CBBT is rediculous.
Avoid 95at all cost. I have been stuck on that road between DC and Richmond more than I want to talk about. - mx727ExplorerWe went last year, mid April. I will say that it was very cold and miserable. Probably not the time of year to go, although this year has been warmer.
- jersey_travelerExplorerI would definitely take US13 through the Delmarva peninsula. We go to the OBX twice a year and I always go that way from New Jersey. It is a nice, calm, leisurely drive. There is a lot of stop and go because of traffic lights, and the speed limits are much lower there, but it beats DC traffic any day of the week. Besides, I have rarely done the speed limit between the Northern Baltimore area and Richmond on I95. Traffic is either going much faster, stopping way to fast, or stopped.
I have taken I81 south to get to Florida, but that is a very long way around for the OBX. - jplante4Explorer IIWe went down I-81 to Winchester VA, then US50/US17 back to I-95 north of Fredricksburg. I-295 to I-64 through Norfolk (turn off propane before the tunnels), then 168/158 down the Currituck Penninsula across to the OBX at Kitty Hawk.
- RGar974417ExplorerWE are going in May. Our plan is to go down Rt 13 through Delaware,Md and Va through Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Then come back 460 to I-95 North to I-64 north to Powhatan State Park. Spend one night there then home via I-81 north.
