Outer Banks traffic busy on Sunday?

We're heading to OBX later this week. If I take I-64 to 168 what is the traffic thru there like on a Sunday? I can vary my arrival time if need be but I was planning on late morning to early afternoon.

  • As a followup...we arrived today at Ocean Waves CG. We came from Ohio via I77, I40 and US64 and it was very nice. Very low traffic, only a few 5% grades that were mostly downhill and short. Found a nice new campground for the night before near Williamston that was only about 2 hours out from OBX. Got into NagsHead about 12:30pm on Sunday and flew right down US12 with no traffic at all. Now for 11 days on the beach!
  • I think I'll go the US64 route thru Manteo. I'm trying to find a stopover for the night before within 2-3 hours away so I can get in early. Any suggestions for a campground or Walmart...somewhere east of Raleigh?
  • OBX beach houses are split between Sat to Sat, or Sun to Sun. This is done to maximize the number of people they can have sitting in traffic for hours. They even charge extra for early check in so that you can get to the traffic jam sooner. If you go early, go real early. Have a plan about what to do while you wait for your keys. Late works better, as long as you have a sucker in the group willing to go get the keys before the realtor closes for the day. It's all worth it, we love the place and rarely vacation elsewhere.
  • Going through Manteo is not a bad idea. You will miss a ton of stop lights and congestion in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. That being said, it can still be pretty busy heading down toward Hatteras.
  • I'm hoping that most of the inbound traffic will be on Saturday. Maybe if I come in from US64 by Manteo I can avoid some of it?
  • Saturdays and Sundays are BIG check-in /out times.

Go early or wait til pm.
