Pa to Ft Worth

Our kids and grand kids are moving to Ft Worth from Pa. We are looking at 2 routes. Mapquest suggestions I-81 to I-40 to I-30. We have been on I-81 and I-40 before. I am looking at I-81 to I-75 to I-59 to I -20. It may be a little longer but we would go through fewer cities. Any comment on the second route.

What brooks379 the trucker said, except at St Louis, I would head south on I-55 to Memphis, then I-40 to I-30. When you get to Greenville, TX on I-30, take exit 94, then right on US380 west. Then take I-35W south to Ft Worth. Note that in TX they have frontage roads, jug handle turnabouts and I-35W does not mean the road goes west. It means that it is on the west side of town but it goes north and south. Just watch the signs. You do not want to go through Dallas!!

380 is now just traffic light after traffic light, avoid.
What part of Pa do you live & again what part of FtWorth will they live ? Our Daughter lived near Allentown for a while & took a route south from there then picked up I20.
A few months back we went to Elkhart & went 30 -40-55-57-70. & Ar/Mo interstate just horrible & there were No rest stops open until we got to southwest Ia

We live west of Reading. Our sons' address is 2130 Skyline Drive, Ft Worth, Tx 76114

Agree. Also, I35W is under heavy construction from Keller into Ft. Worth on the north side. We live in the area.

  • As a trucker going from NYC area to So Cal and Texas for over 35 years I ran those routes a thousand times and going to ST Louis and down to Ft Worth is the smoothest, flattest, less traffic way to go.Most people just look at the map and go the way they think is shortest when they go RVing once or twice a year. Did it for a living, (over 8,000,000 miles verifiable, accident free miles) put 2 kids through collage driving that way, been there done that. I don't look for the shortest route I look for the safest route with the least traffic and that is the way. I 81 and I 40 need about 2 more lane on both interstates !! Good luck.

From where we live in East Texas it is usually either I-30/I-40 or I-20 which we have to take depending on whether we are going straight east (I-20) or northeast (I-30/I-40), so we have a lot of experience on this part of your route.

I-30/I-40 from Texarkana to Memphis is one of the most heavily traveled in terms of 18 wheeler trucks in the nation. The one time I would NOT want to be on that stretch would be with rain. The spray from the trucks would be blinding and it is not unusual to find trucks running side by side in passing. Still if we are going northeast this is our route. Little Rock is easy to get around and that is the only city between Memphis and Texarkana.

I-20 has a few rough spots as far as pavement surface and therefore has a bad reputation--just above I-10 in Louisiana. I don't find it as bad as some. Just slow down through Jackson, MS and approaching Shreveport, but there is a good bypass route around north of Shreveport. I-20 is certainly a better approach to Fort Worth than I-30, for what that's worth. Traffic has always flowed freely around south of Dallas the many times we've make that route west--nothing like 635!

padredw, This man Knows Texas ^^^^^ follow this advice.

  • There is a little less traffic going that way once you get on I 59 and less hills. I 81 and I 40 always seem to be crowded. My least favorite interstates! I always go through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and into Texas to FT Worth.
