Pacifica, CA to "The Mystery Spot" time?

We will be driving our 30ft Class A rental from Pacifica, CA to "The Mystery Spot" on Sunday, December 27, and plan to drive along Route 1.

Google says 1 1/2 hours, but that sounds very optimistic to me! Can anyone give me a real-world approximation, including a couple of stops to see the view?

Our final destination for the day is Marina, CA. We also hope to stop for a while at Natural Bridges State Beach to see the butterflies. This stop can come before or after "The Mystery Spot" depending on reservations.

  • It is fast so long as you are not on a weekday when there are commuters and school buses to contend with on your travel. Worst case you should be able to average 35 MPH going down Hwy 1. Leave time to stop and take in the views as this is some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. Davenport is a good place to stop and eat and take a break and there are the elephant seals to see at Ano Nuevo.
  • Thanks for the helpful replies. I'm counting the days until our trip. We reserved for 1:30 pm which should be plenty of time to get there from Pacifica.
  • Looking at the responses from RV2go and rexlion prompts the question for all - how many/where are "Mystery Spots" or similar sites?

OK, I give up, Where & what is "The Mystery Spot"?

You gotta travel to the west coast sometime.
Actually, that's going to happen this coming year. Might have to add that to the bucket list.. Thanks for the link.;)
  • Highway 1 is a very narrow, winding 2-lane that hugs the coast, often with steep drops on the ocean side. It might be a white-knuckler if you are not accustomed to driving a large motorhome. I recommend figuring in an average speed of 25 to 30. Search Youtube for videos.
  • I would allow 3 hours if the weather is good. That gives you plenty of time for sightseeing. If the weather is bad or there is a landslide it can take hours or days to clear.
  • Not sure how much traffic you will have to deal with, but driving in areas that do not have real heavy traffic, we average about 45 miles per hour, so use that to figure how long to get somewhere. This would include slowing for small towns and rest stops. You probably won't be stopping for breaks with that short of a trip.
