Philly to Niagara - routes?

A weeks trip coming up. We are in Philly and want to go to Niagara. What route should we go and where to stay? First time RVers. 12 year old and Small dog in tow so interested in fun activities and dog friendly stops. Thanks for any advice!!
  • I would take 15/I-99 to I-390 to I-90 to I-290 to I-190

15/I-99 is now a nice 4 lane limited access hyw.
  • Just left the falls 3 weeks ago. We stayed at Cinderella motel/campground. Don't make the mistake that I made, pay more and get more room. Could not open awning, if that tells you anything. My slides on the curb side was maybe 5' between my coach and my neighbors door. There is a nice KOA down about 3/4 mile that looked pretty good. We are from Florida, customs was a real treat. Tore my truck apart and 2 hrs latter told me to enjoy the falls. I'm glad I was nice, it might have been 6hrs if I would have came with the coach. Glad when we got back to the good ol USA.

This is good but also consider taking Rte 63 at Mt Morris to Batavia and then get onto I-90 going west.
  • Letchworth State Park is worth a visit. One entrance is just north of Mt Morris.
  • Another choice is to go through Scranton on 81 catch 86 West at Horseheads go Rte 14 North to see Watkins Glen St Park (great park/take hike up or down) and then go 14 North through Geneva to 90 going west
  • Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Park are both fabulous. Letchworth is much larger; more than one full day would not in any way be too much there. Watkins Glen can be comfortably "seen" in a day, at least the major highlights.

Knoebels amusement park in Elysburg is a fun and (relatively) affordable stop, too. They have two campgrounds directly associated with it: Lake Glory is a couple miles away from the amusement park, with shuttle service a few times a day. The Knoebels campground is directly adjacent to the amusement park, such that you walk back and forth. The Lake Glory campground is overall the nicer campground, with bigger sites and a more campground-like atmosphere, but I prefer the convenience of walking to and from my site and being able to (for instance) take a quick nap in the afternoon.

If you stretch your timetable, you could see all these in a nice loop (Philly to Knoebels to Letchworth to Niagara Falls to Watkins Glen to Philly, or the same in reverse), but for a week trip it's probably too much to do comfortably.

Pleased to know that our border services are doing their job! ;)
  • No...US to Canada was the real ruff. Canada to US was no questions other than whiskey or tobacco. Have a nice trip he says. That's what I really call doing there job for the US. That's why we need some real border control.
  • The US boarder Patrol is probably like the rest of America they don't want to "offend" anyone so they just let anyone in without question.
