Phoenix 17 truck route?

Looks like the 17 is a truck route off the 10 which goes S around the airport before hooking up again with the 10 to Casa Grande.

Miles and time look to be about the same either way just thinking the 17 being a truck route might have a little less traffic depending on time of day which for us coming from Indio, CA should be around noon.

  • If you want to avoid all Phoenix traffic take Rt 85 south from Goodyear down to Gila Bend then I-8 east to Casa Grande. That said, unless you're planning on going through Phoenix at prime drive time, I doubt you'll have much trouble. An accident can tie the I-10 or 17 route up any time, but although there will be heavy traffic, we've found it moves well.
  • Take I-10 east to highway 85 south to Gila Bend then I-8 to Casa Grande. This completely bypasses the Phoenix area. Highway 85 is mostly 4 lane divided all good road.
  • They both go the same place, and there won't be bad traffic at noon either way.
    Have a safe trip.
  • Well, they may have designated it as a truck route but the 17 has just as much car traffic as the 10. Phoenix is as bad as Los Angeles, it starts getting really busy around 3. If you can, plan to go through around 10:30. We try to do that with ANY major city, 10:30 is after the morning rush and before the lunch hour rush.
