Phoenix to Banff Route

Planning to head to Banff from Phoenix, AZ in May. The plan is to head to Las Vegas, pick up I15 and follow it to Sweetgrass, MT. Planning on driving <250 miles/day. Does this sound like a reasonable route choice?

OK. But is that the route you posted and recommend??

Autumn snowbird made the recommendation. I noted the OP was enquiring about May so pointed out it wouldn't be open. Yes, from Watertown you could take #6 to#3, west to 22 which is a good 2 lane highway running through ranch land close to the front range. It's a prettier drive than 2 which is 4 lane through flat land.
From just north of Longview turn west on 541 (secondary paved road) then north on 40.
Kananaskis is beautiful but also busy. Alternatively you could continue up 22 to 1
  • trigley, I think you meant Waterton...that is the route we always took to go up to Rocky Mountain House and then west to dry camp in the mountains, except through Kananaskis, which is beautiful. Did the Kananaskis route for a day drive one time from Longview and ran into a cattle herd being herded by a few "cowboys". They didn't see us until we were down the road a bit and then parted the herd for us to get by. It was something you would not see here in the flatlands. As I have said in previous posts, we would come through Sweetgrass/Coutts, grab 501 over to #2, up to Cardston and take #5 west to #6, stay at the Waterton Springs Campground for a couple of weeks and then continue on from there.

OK. Thanks! I can't find 541 on Google map, unless it becomes 40 somewhere west of Longview.
I've de-railed this thread enough and have a year to figure this out:
Houston to Glacier via US287, then to Waterton or drive on to Alaska?
  • TxGearhead, see that major intersection at the northern part of Longview...go left on that and it will take you to 40. It's just north of the campground in Longview.
  • Several people ahve suggested that you take 22 (just east of Pincher Creek Alberta to Longview and the turn west ton #40 to go over the Kananaskis country. A great road BUT - Highwood Pass on 40 thru' Peter Lougheed Provincial Park usually does not open until at least the long weekend (around the 24th) of May!!
    Timing is paramount!

I repeat, June 15 according to Alberta parks site.
