Planing a NJ to Alaska Trip, what to plan for?

Wife and I are thinking of a special RV trip this year and have 3 ideas on where we would like to travel too. Rockies/Cascades or just go to Alaska..We have been to the first 2 but not Alaska. So my question is to anyone from the N.east of the US or NJ what is the time I should allow for the trip and figured about 10,000mi round trip.I'm looking as the ride being the best part of the trip, all the sites to see and camp as we travel to Alaska. For the ones who made that trip- my distance, cost, time to help plan this trip and expectations I should have for this trip....Thanks

  • Just go for it. Little planning needs to be done. The biggest expense will be fuel. Plenty of opportunities to just pull off and spend the night. The only reservations we made were at Riley Camnpground in Denali (we stayed 6 nights) and we made that just a couple weeks before our stay. If you are flexible and do not have to stay in campgrounds all the time, you will have many more options. Don't forget your Senior Pass because there are public campgrounds where you can use it but they are usually dry camping. Get the Milepost nd the Church's campground book.
  • Everyone's time, distance, and cost will vary because of interests, type of camping, cultural events, tours, and so forth. We went up in the summer of 2015, left W.PA the first week of June, and left Alaska via the Ferry the first week of August. We had time constraints on the front and back ends of the trip.

We also wanted to spend some time at the western parks while out that way.

Pick up a copy of the newest Milepost book to help determine sites to see, time, and distances. Might also be interested in Church's book on Alaska camping.

Sit down with all involved in the trip and decide what you want to do/see. If in Canada around July 1 (Canada Day), make reservations for your Canadian sites now. If in Alaska or the west around July 4, same thing. Consider reservations for Denali and the bus tours into the park. Some have done Denali without reservations ahead of time, but I wouldn't want to drive that far and be shut out.

Recommend you spend a few days in Banff NP and Jasper NP via the Icefields highway. Much beauty to see.

If using the Ferry at all for any segment of your trip, check the schedules, and make reservations when you are certain of dates/times. The Ferry system charges by length of RV (and toad), and whether or not you want a cabin.

    Best wishes and good luck.

I have driven nearly all the lower 48, but as far as Alaska goes, I'll fly there and rent whatever I need to get around. How are you with mosquitos as big as sparrows and grizzlys bear as big as grizzly bears? From Oregon, Alaska in not that far away by RV, but once you get to Toad River up in Canada, you might change you plans. Try this: Set your sights for Banff and drive up the Ice Fields Parkway to Jasper. Take the Tram up the mountain and have dinner at the restaurant at the top. Camp at Pocahontas Campground near the Miette Hot Springs. Go for a soak at Miette and while you are lounging in the pool, ask yourself, "Do I really want to log more windshield time?" Go for a hike around Lake Louise, on the way between Banff and Jasper. Make a side trip to Hope, BC and visit the "Rambo" museum at the visitor center. Rambo was filmed there. By then you will say, "Alaska? Maybe some other time."
  • At least:
    A month going.
    A month there..
    A month coming back...
  • Chase the snow north then let it chase you south. No need to plan. Dry camp on the side of the road..
