Port Angeles to Portland

We are arriving by ferry at Port Angles and would like to know if the 101 coast route is a good route for a MH or should we take the interior route. This is our first time to WA and would like to spend about 5 days seeing the sites. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

  • If you get this in time...

If you self-contained and can dry camp stay at the Quanalt Casino on the highway to Ocean Shores. It's free and you can look out over the dunes to the ocean. We actually had reservations for 3 nights at a park with full hookups and cancelled it to stay at the casino.

Going the west route is the prettiest.

    Hope you like it!
  • I used to live in Forks Washington. Highway 101 is a good state highway no matter which way you go. I'd go west out of PA, then south.

My only suggestion is to fill up with gas/fuel in Forks before heading south on 101. Watch out for deer and elk on or near the roadway. It's a beautiful area, lots and lots of rain. Lots and lots of trees, and clear cuts.

Wind your way through Hoquiam and Aberdeen, and continue south on 101. Grayland State park is one of our favorite Washington State parks.

Stop in the Raymond/South Bend area for the freshest seafood in the world. We buy the half bushel bags of oysters in the shell and cook them on the campfire. Oh my gosh...

I also used to live in Long Beach Washington, another beautiful place to visit, but not to live. Kite flying capitol of the world.

Enjoy the trip. PM me if you need more info.
  • Go counter-clockwise around the peninsula. If you have time do these side trips:

Drive up to Hurricane Ridge (a very steep road, not for all MH's)
Hike to Marymere Falls at Lake Crescent
Drive out to Neah Bay and hike to Cape Flattery
Drive to La Push, and hike the Rialto Beach at Mora CG
Avoid the Twilight Movie tourist traps in Forks
Drive up to the Hoh Rain Forest
    Walk the beach at Kalaloch

101 goes both south and west from there, the western route will follow the coast and the other route would be a more direct route to Portland.

Scenic go west - speed go south

That's what I meant... only one road in or out of PA....101
  • US101 east from PA follows Hood Canal south to Olympia and I5. This is a nice drive along an inland waterway, with lots of state parks. I5 from there is the fastest way to Portland.

US101 west from PA gives more access to the Nat Park, mostly via side trips to the beach (at Forks) or up river valleys. Most of it is inland (through forest), with only one part that follows a wild outer coast. Further south you can take side trips to beach communities like Oceans Shores, Westport and Long Beach. After crossing into Oregon you can take US30 east to Portland.

Some dismiss the Washington portion of US101 because it doesn't hug the coast as much a the Oregon part. Still, if I have time, I prefer the sights along, and off of, (west) US101 to the sights along I5.
  • If you stay on 101 to Olympia, you can hit I5 at that time. If you take 104 to Bremerton, you'll end up on 16 which takes you over the Tacoma Narrows bridge and it's a TOLL Bridge going East.. I don't recall all the prices for going thru the toll booths, as I have a pass and can just drive thru and it's $4.50 a pop now.. I think the booths are $5.00 and if you have over 2 axles, it costs more.. (including what you are towing too)

I'd just do the 101 route, as that will have more to see anyway..

    Good luck and enjoy!

  • The 101 is an easy two lane road and a lovely drive. One of our favorite stops in Rest-A-While RV park on the Olympic Peninsular, the park is not much, but the location is fantastic.
