Port Aransas to Fredricksburg.

We are heading to Fredricksburg on Monday. Map programs take you right through San Antonio. Having just spent 10 days there, I don't think I want to tow through there.
What about the 2 loop roads around the west side of the city. Looks like a little longer route but might be a lot less traffic. The little bit I was on the 1604 loop, it seemed less busy.
Thoughts?

  • How was 173?

We're going to Kerrville from Harlingen soon to get some twisties for riding our motorcycles. Twisties are good for motorcycles but bad for my RV - it's big and I'll have to deal with two cats that get motion sickness if there's much 3-dimensional movement.
  • Thanks everyone for the input.
Ended up doing 173. Not a bad way to go and as a bonus it got me away from the strong cross winds I had on the Interstate this morning.
Going across the bay this morning it was 20 mph plus hitting the rig sideways. Why is it the wind never seems to be pushing the rear of the rig?

The 1604 loop on the west side of San Antonio has a lot of construction. They may call it a loop but it has 3 stop lights and a lots of traffic.

If you take 173, I would not go all the way to Kerrville.
Take 173 to Camp Verde. Turn right on Camp Verde Rd to Center Point. At Center point turn right on 27 to Comfort, Then 87 straight to Fredericksburg.

If you go over to seguin and take 46 don't go all the way to Boerne(I-10). Take 46 to 281 then 281 up to 290 (Johnson City) then 290 to
Fredericksburg. This route has a lot more traffic.

If it was me I would take the 173 route as well. Kick back and enjoy the view and low traffic. 46 has become too developed which increases traffic.

I NEVER pass through Hondo without stopping at El Charro for a bowl of tortilla soup. It's a little hole-in-the-wall that serves authentic Mexican fare.
  • Coming from Port Aransas, head up towards Seguin, then catch TX 46 around through New Braunfels to Boerne, then onto I-10. This will bypass all of San Antonio.
  • What about taking TX 173 at Jourdanton, TX and going up through Kerrville? That is probably the route I would take.
  • The outer loops (410 & 610)can be just as bad depending on time of day. Whichever route you choose avoid morning rush - before 9AM and afternoon traffic - after 3PM. It would be easier on Sunday.
