Priceless Question

I often go on to the Trip Advisor site, to help out when I can, see what people's concerns are, and also for entertainment.
This was a question this morning from British Travellers about to make their first trip to the Rocky Mountains.

"When researching and I first saw someone mention “bear spray” I assumed it was a joke but I’ve seen it mentioned a few times so I think it must be a genuine thing? If so I have a couple of questions:
2) How is bear spray used? Do you spray it on your clothes only, or on exposed skin like insect repellent? Does it really deter bears?"

Surprisingly, everyone answered honestly! I was was tempted to say to make sure you get lots on your face, but of course I didn't!

That is the norm on TripAdvisor-there's very little "snark" on there. I have an account and post after every trip I take. I probably would have laughed my butt off if I saw that before I take into account not everyone is an outdoor person.
  • We had Nellie the black bear come into our campsite every day for a week or so, 2 years ago. She was not scared of a quad being revved up, or a truck horn being honked at her. There was a berry patch close by as in a few feet close. So myself, my son and son in law stood there watching her and we each had a can of bear spray. Never needed it as she was obedience trained. When she decided that she had enough berries for a few hours she would start to move towards us and we would say, in a calm voice, no Nellie go the other way and she would. It was a daily occurrence. I have to say that she was only interested in those berries. Oh yes, she sure didn't like it when another camper fired off a bear bang. That made her move quite fast. There were a lot of pictures taken from the 3 trailers by the woman folk and yes I was to be the sacrificial person as , at that time I was 69 years old thereby being the slowest of the 3 of us standing there and moving with her as she went around the campsite. We were dry camping in the Rocky Mountains, in Alberta.

Actually, bear spray is used like pepper spray on humans. If attacked by a bear you spray it in their face and then run like ... (well, you know!)

;) Never run, walk backwards slowly. Or have someone with you who you know is slower than you :)

  • Tell them it's to help keep the mosquitoes off of the bears. That the mosquitoes are so large that if several of them attack a bear at one time, they could carry it off. They're to tell the bear to "sit" and then go up to them an spray a liberal amount all over the bear starting with the head.
