Questions re travel on WA SR 243, 24 and 241

We're heading south from BC with our 37' fifth wheel in the next two weeks (Nov 2017). Usually we travel through WA via SR97 over to Quincy then I-90 to Ellensburg, then I-82 to Yakima and south from there. I see there may be a shorter way to I-82, via SR 243 to Beverly and Mattawa along the Columbia River then across the Columbia via SR24, then SR241 to Sunnyside and I-82. Assuming there is no major storm or extreme winter weather happening at the time, is the alternate route via SR 243 etc. safe enough and the condition of the road surface good enough for towing a rig of our size? Has anyone else travelled that route? Thanks.

  • Thru Benton City would be a fine option. The road is a little slow but not many miles and probably net about the same number of miles total. Over all either way will save many miles over Yakima or Sunnyside route.

legsnred - You suggested that after crossing the Columbia on SR24, we go southeast on SR240 toward Tri-Cities, and I get that. In order to avoid Richland traffic what do you think about a turn after the Ecology reserve south onto SR225 and heading to Benton City, then onto I-82?

Excellent news. Thank you so much for the reply. It's especially comforting to hear about this from a 'local'.
  • We live in Prosser Wa on I-82 just east of Sunnyside. The route you asked about is just fine for a rig of any size. Plus probably total of less hills than going thru Yakima. But even shorter and just as easy is instead of cutting off to Sunnyside is continue on into the Tri-cities and pick I-82 there.
