Not the best of roads. Better would be I5 to Sacramento and I80 over the hill
Sounds like you have not ever driven that road.
89/44/36 are two lane state highways, no steep grades, very few curves, pavement in far better condition than the I80 obstacle course.
Lots of places to pull off the highway for a break or overnight boondocking. - Us_out_WestExplorer

I went 44 to Susanville and 395 to Reno. Very scenic and I don't recall anything beyond the typical mountain driving experience. Beats the heck out of the interstates IMHO.
Agree....we are from Reno. Very nice drive and no slow downs. - korbeExplorer

Hey now, there will be no tongue and cheek replies on this forum!!!! - pauljExplorer IICA89/44/US395 (ie. Shasta, Susanville) is fine.
Or you could stay on 89 a little longer by taking Moony Rd (good paved county rd) around the east side of Mt Lassen, and then take CA79 over US395. That takes you past Lake Almanor, a popular recreational lake (reservoir). I passed that way several times because some Reno relatives had a 'mountain' cabin in the golfing community of Graeagle. - kokopelli40ExplorerThanks for the responses and normally I would go over hwy 58 (willamette Pass) but the tunnel is being worked on and odot says expect long delays during the day and closed at night.
Again Thanks feel better now about hWY 89 - The_TexanExplorer

this is our preferred route whenever we are going from Reno to Redding then I-5 Eugene.
I would take 44,36,395 far a direct route. - korbeExplorerIf you look at a map of the west, you can see why many trucks using I-5 and I-80 will take the short cut of 89,44,36 and 395. We use this route all the time, and if you're not in a hurry, plenty of sites to see.

Sorry 89 out of Mt Shata via Mc Cloud to Reno map shows 89 to 44.
Appreciate the replies. I like scenic, however I do want to make some time also. I will be traeling from the north.
Our preferred route.
Another good route if you are coming from Salem is Willamette Pass. Highway 58 just South of Eugene then 97 into klamath Falls then 39/139 to 395 and into Reno. That is the route the trucks and buses use. - Marv_HoagExplorer
