Some of my journey's take me places where no tourist would ever go. Ever.

READ COMMON SENSE HAS TO BE UTILIZED. This isn't some "you're either for it 100% or against it 100%" game. If an individual has problems differentiating restrained self-protection from predatory violence then that individual shouldn't be out and about anywhere without supervision. I am about 80% disabled. Obvious to some predators I would be an easy mark. An average 12-year-old could beat me to a pulp. Fun huh? Yet I am not afraid to live in what has been termed the most dangerous area of Mexico outside the cities.

My mentioning I have a crossbow and pepper spray brought forth a vision of a cross between Charles Manson and Rambo, huh? I find that to be a pity. Sad.

I like the oven cleaner versus the wasp spray, some insecticides are prohibited by Mexican customs, all RV's have ovens and you need to clean them.

Turn outside light on and none inside, have a powerful flashlight that you can aim through the window pointed at the area of the door, that will scare the panties off anyone out there.

Just make sure that the flashlight is up against the glass, otherwise the light reflecting off the glass will illuminate you like a deer in you know what.

Bullets and crossbow arrows go trough RV's like a hot knife on butter.

Just be aware of where you park and your surroundings, be safe out there.

Such wonderful poeple do not deserve to be punished by self serving alarmists who spin monster stories and try their damndest to scare everyone away. It hurts. Look a child in the eye and tell them why you screwed up their Christmas.

MW, why would you carry such an arsenal if you truly believed it was safe. You claim others are alarmists but you carry crossbows and nuclear grade chili powder to spray.

I din't know who is scarier, those that are trying to protect themselves or the crooks.

IF you are into nasty chemicals, my parents always carried what I thought was the worst: oven cleaner.

Twenty five inches worth. And quarrels that are 18" long. Hung above the door. This is a nasty weapon. Using it means going to jail even though the weapon is legal and a robber may be backing you down the hall toward your bedroom. I do have weapons-grade capsicum aerosol used by troops in India. It's so strong (Ghost Chili) it must be washed off of skin or skin blisters. The Mexican justice system is not aware of this potent a spray yet. I'll bet they ban it...

But getting back to the crossbow. Like a firearm when a person grabs it, it means that it will be used to incapacitate a violent attacker. Incapacitate means death or life-threatening injury. Look, if a one in a million circumstance occurs and two or more nasty people are demanding a wallet I'll fork over my phony wallet. Some bad people are evil and their intent is to hurt. Judgement is mandatory. If you blind them with a STRONG porch light you can grab the crossbow and back up further into your rig. If they pursue he or they are going to encounter an immediate and violent reaction.

I do not and I will repeat and emphasize this, EVER expect to have to touch that crossbow. Yes, uncounted SSP inspections and puesto de control military personnel have seen the UNCOCKED crossbow, hanging in it's hooks. They also notice the paper bullseye target folded next to it. One marina asked me "Why do you have it here?" My response was simple and unchallengeable - "So you won't find it hidden later like it is a weapon". This kind of nutty rationalization works down here. But for God's Sake, do not store quarrels near the weapon. Quarrels ONLY come out at night. The device is ONLY cocked when I am overnighting in a gasolinera (for example) all alone in certain parts of the country. Evil people who prey on the innocent in my opinion have given up much of their rights, including the right to live. I am old, and disabled. But I sure as hell will loose a quarrel at a bad guy designing to hurt or kill me.

Same attitude, same actions in the USA, Guatemala, Honduras.

BTW, ghost chili aerosol is NOT available to the public. It was handed to me in Mexico by a hotel guest vacationing in Mexico. He did not state his occupation and I did not ask. He was of sufficient age to be a major or colonel in the armed forces. He and his wonderful wife cooked up enough meals with curry to last me three lifetimes. The gentleman shared encyclopedic grade information with me about cultivating mango trees, curing diseases, and a treasure trove of of mango know-how.

The aerosol bottle is gray in color about 2 fluid ounces, and the print is in Hindi. I was cautioned about trying-it-out. The slightest discharge seems to initiate a gradual leakage of propellent.

Regarding chemicals justified or not my fear is that the crook will squeeze the trigger blinded or not. To my way of thinking maybe it's best to not camp alone and secondly never ever open the door after nightfall. It seems like 95% of Petty-Thefts while parked overnight in a gasolinera happens to those folk who insist on staying in a pitch-black area with no lighting.

Will serve to frighten all but the tiniest of tiny fraction of robbers. Slam drawers like you are in a hurry. Yeah I used it at Lagos de Montebello and three of them ran like rabbits. Anf one was holding what appeared to be a Saturday Night Special. In ALL arrest casas in Mexico the justice system makes a big deal out of possession of ammunition. The simple possession of a firearm is bad enough a loaded firearm is hell on wheels for sentencing. Something to think about.

Fact not fiction. Robbers do not work for cartels. Cartels demand about 75% of the take. It ain't gonna happen. Robbers are free-lance and genuine sicarios will execute them on sight for dissing the authority of the plaza. Robbers run scared and a hard nut to crack RV means they will flee. This was explained to me carefully by Beto and Chelas who were at one time gunmen for La Familia. They quit after heads rolled across the Disco floor on Uruapan and that idiot tossed the grenades at the 16th Sept grito in Morelia. Those terrorists acts disgusted them. Both men acted as vigilantes and enforced the law from Solara de Agua to Bochil Michoacan. They caught wholsale mango thieves, shakedown artists and robbers opetating in the area. La Familia did not terrorize citizenry. Then the Caballeros Templarios replaced LFM and all that changed.
