Ricketts Glen SP - PA

Hi All --

looking at heading to ricketts glen this weekend, just wondering what the route is like heading in? I will be coming from the north-east extension of the pa turnpike with a fairly large 40' fifth wheel camper....

any experience?
  • Pictures are great, tx. Will plan to hike to the waterfalls next time.
  • Thanks for the advice/pictures...appreciated. Unfortunately with the weather forecast and several small kids we decided to cancel this weekend, will have to try again though.

For anyone who has never been up the seven mountains 322 hill, I regularly pull my 14k fiver up it slowly without any problems. I don't think it is as steep a grade as this one however I do believe it is longer....
  • We were at Rickett's Glen SP in August. It's a truly beautiful park; here's the view from our campsite:

The hike to the waterfalls is spectacular. Here's just one of the many waterfalls:

Getting to the park is another question, especially for those coming from Red Rock and traveling north on 487. Fortunately, we came from the north (Dushore) but we did leave the park and took 487 south towards Red Rock. As these photos indicate, please be careful!

We didn't have any issues traveling down the 18% grade, but we were in a relatively small RV (a class B Roadtrek).

But, in summary, Rickett's Glen is worth the drive to get there!
  • Haven't been on route 322, but we didn't have a problem going down the steep hill from Ricketts Glen in our Class C. We were either in 2nd or possibly 1st gear for the descent. As shown in my last picture, the heavy log truck made it up.
  • ugh, glad I asked, but that would add a ton to our trip....

anyone know how that hill compares to the one on US-322 heading towards state college? (over seven mountains)
  • We went to Ricketts Glen three weeks ago. The PA State Parks
recommended the alternate (487S) route because of the steep grade, when coming in from 118. We are very glad we took the alternate route. The ranger confirmed that 487N is too steep a grade for our motorhome (32') and toad.

I looked up this road in another reference guide mountain directory for truckers which also said to take alternate route. This is the URL for the mountain directory, available in West and East mountain versions http://www.mountaindirectory.com/

    Safe driving all.
  • If you will be coming from the south on route 487 there is a 2 mile 18% climb just before getting to the park. See this recent thread.
