Road Conditions in Banff & Jasper

We're getting ready to tour Alberta, BC and the Alaskan Panhandle. Want to go thru Banff and Jasper before we head for Edmonton but heard that the roads thru the parks are pretty rough. Would appreciate info from anyone who has taken that route.

  • Currently in Banff, Roads are great. There is one spot on the TCH in BC where they are clearing up a mud slide and one spot where bridge work has reduced the highway to alternating one lane. No real delays at either spot on Saturday.

There is still lots of snow in Lake Louise. About 18 inches of packed snow on the path tot he back of the lake. Roads are clear though.

Not heading up to Jasper this year.
  • Moved to RVing in Canada and Alaska from Roads and Routes
  • Make sure you allocate enough time so that you don't have to rush through Banff and Jasper. And the only problem with the road is that the scenery can be distracting -- this was taken from the shoulder of the Icefields Parkway:

  • We just went through Banff and Jasper, including the Icefields Parkway. Really not a problem besides a few rough spots that were pretty easy to navigate through.
  • We were in Banff and Jasper last summer after the floods and almost all the damage had been repaired by August. The roads in, around and through the parks are just fine. Icefields Parkway isn't a particularly slow road; there was only a small stretch still being repaired when we left. Our Canadian cousins are really far more civilized than we give them credit for!

The worst roads we encountered were in Whistler Campground in Jasper. The CG loops themselves were rutted and filled with potholes. If you went slowly it wasn't a real problem, though.
  • The highway past Banff and Lake Louise and on through Yoho is the Trans Canada Hwy, the main cross country highway of Canada. The Banff NP portion is divided.

There might still be some rough spots left over from last years flooding (mainly in the Canmore area).

The Icefield Parkway north to Jasper is a slower road - which is fine given the scenery. But nothing worse than the roads through Washington National Parks.

There are lots of threads about these parks on the Canada/Alaska section.
