Road (highway 46/41) from Paso Robles to 1-5
Is this route a good one for travel with a long 5th wheel trailer? The GPS suggests we drive north along 101 to San Jose and then link up with 1-5. We want to avoid any twisting mountain driving.

Sounds like you're coming from the south on 101. A GPS may have you take 41 to 46 in Atascadero. Don't do it. That section is great for a motorcycle or other small car. Not so much for RVs. If going further north on 5 and want to avoid Sacramento consider taking 101 to the 580 eventually getting on the 80 east for a few miles then the 505 to north of Sacraments. If you can do that during mid day traffic should be lighter than during rush hour. Usually fuel up just as we get to Outlet Stores in Gilroy. Easy off and on gas and diesel at Monterey Rd.
