We thought we were in for an adventure when we left for Alaska this last May ... now that we're going into Central America: reading all of the warnings and talking to Americans, all you hear is "don't go there", "the violence is terrible", "kidnappings / hijackings" ...
The funny thing is, whilst on the Alaska trip, when we met up with other travelers from Europe or Canada, they usually said "it's ok, just be careful".
I guess you can always be unlucky, and I realize there is a much greater chance of something bad happening in northern Mexico versus traveling through Canada and Alaska ... knock on wood however that our traveling adventures will continue without too many troubles!
We're thinking about crossing the border in Laredo >>> Monterrey >>> Mexico City, before turning east towards the Yucatan. We've been reading bad news about the road south from Brownsville, although other reports say that the federales and the army have stepped up security there.
We heard the 'safest' place to cross is into Baja, and we're not opposed to that, but the ferry to the mainland (Mazatlán area) is quite costly and takes a long time.
Any thoughts? Any desire to form a 'small caravan' to at least a few hundred miles south of the border area?
