When I used to help haul horses from the Finger Lakes racetrack We used to take 390 to 15 to Harrisburg then 81 to Winchester where we caught US 17 to I95 south of Washington. Just after getting on I95 (1-2 miles) there was/is a rest area were we would rest for an hour or two but people used to stay overnight.
If the area is full the next exit has a big mall were you can pull in and spend the night. I believe there is also a WALMART in the area.
Final destination was Tampa Downs
This route is now my preferred route. 81 to 17 bypasses the DC area nicely. Take the bypass around Richmond, major delays on the bridge construction thru town. I81 south used to be my favorite route south but the truck traffic and frequent accidents, steep hills and crossing the Blue Ridge Mtns have changed my opinion. I95 south used to be congested, but now traffic moves better than I81 once you are south of DC. And there are lots of RV parks with long pull thrus all along 95 in NC, SC and Ga. Except for parts of SC I95 is now three lane all the way and much better than the old days. The I81 corridor is now loaded with huge distribution warehouse centers and the truck traffic is really heavy. Also I81 is mostly two lane all the way south. I avoid I95 from Boston to DC, but south of DC its way better than it was in the past. I set the cruise control at 65mph in the right lane and rarely had to change lanes. Traffic was a little heavy around Jacksonville but not for long. Also winter driving conditions are usually much better along the coast than further inland using I81. My overnight stops south of DC were Carolina Crossroads in NC and Coastal Ga Rv in Brunswick Ga. Both were terrific parks
