Rochester, NY to Hobe Sound, FL

We're traveling from Rochester, NY to Hobe Sound, FL with a travel trailer at Christmas time and was wondering if anyone had a good route. Most routes take us I-95 around Baltimore and DC; I'd like to avoid both. Anyone travel through eastern OH, I-77?
  • Thanks everyone for the route advice, I greatly appreciate your insight. Ultimately the weather is going to determine which route and you've given me several options to choose from.

Also thanks for the stop over suggestions. I Googled them and they all look like great places to stay.

BillMFI - Thanks for your response (you too darsben and "fisherman"). One question...do you take 81 out of Syracuse or 390/US15(or is it I-99 now) and then 81 to 17 bypass.

My advice is to take the 17, not directly from the 81 but from the 66. I did both.

You are correct! I use i66 to 17.

  • If it is a nice day I would take 390 to 15 to Harisburg. If it calls for snow/ice then thruway to 81. Route 15 is not plowed as quickly as the interstates. If it has been designated an Interstate now it may be plowed better.

Either one works. 15 hits 81 by Harrisburg and the drive along the river is pretty. I used 15 a lot when I lived in Elmira because it was more direct. Two weeks ago I spent a night at Western Village near Carlisle, Pa. Nothing fancy but nice long and level pull thru. It might be a good first day stop for you. I made it to Carolina Cross Roads easily the next day. Lovely park with wide spacious all pull thru sites. Coastal Ga is an easy next day and has all paved sites but call ahead because they often fill up.Both of these parks are extremely well maintained.

When I used to help haul horses from the Finger Lakes racetrack We used to take 390 to 15 to Harrisburg then 81 to Winchester where we caught US 17 to I95 south of Washington. Just after getting on I95 (1-2 miles) there was/is a rest area were we would rest for an hour or two but people used to stay overnight.
If the area is full the next exit has a big mall were you can pull in and spend the night. I believe there is also a WALMART in the area.
    Final destination was Tampa Downs

This route is now my preferred route. 81 to 17 bypasses the DC area nicely. Take the bypass around Richmond, major delays on the bridge construction thru town. I81 south used to be my favorite route south but the truck traffic and frequent accidents, steep hills and crossing the Blue Ridge Mtns have changed my opinion. I95 south used to be congested, but now traffic moves better than I81 once you are south of DC. And there are lots of RV parks with long pull thrus all along 95 in NC, SC and Ga. Except for parts of SC I95 is now three lane all the way and much better than the old days. The I81 corridor is now loaded with huge distribution warehouse centers and the truck traffic is really heavy. Also I81 is mostly two lane all the way south. I avoid I95 from Boston to DC, but south of DC its way better than it was in the past. I set the cruise control at 65mph in the right lane and rarely had to change lanes. Traffic was a little heavy around Jacksonville but not for long. Also winter driving conditions are usually much better along the coast than further inland using I81. My overnight stops south of DC were Carolina Crossroads in NC and Coastal Ga Rv in Brunswick Ga. Both were terrific parks

  • We cross over at Buffalo to I90; I79; 19; (4 lanes with some stop lights.. but good roads.. just watch your speed (State Troopers); I77; I26 to I95. Fairly quiet ride until Charlotte NC (depends on time of day) then I95; A1A to 301 etc. As long as there's no serious snow in the West Virginia area (check before you go) you'll be good to go.
