Route 66 Travels?

Watching an episode of "Counting Cars", on History Channel. Guy wanted to have his 56 Chevy painted in Route 66 theme. Got wife and I talking and wondering if anyone has taken an RV down Route 66? I know I can search the route and see what kind of camping spots along the way, but just curious if anyone has done that. We think it would be kinda cool.

  • We did Los Angeles to Oklahoma City then up to Branson. A wonder trip. Most of the time you are on I-40 but there are many Route 66 by-passes to take you to many of the historic towns. Definitely worth the trips.
  • It is a very popular RV trip and I suspect many thousands have probably done it either all the way or along significant portions thereof.

As a straight through trail route 66 hasn't existed for probably 30 years and what remains is bits and pieces here and there. And even back in its days there were many realignments as they continually improved the route. So anybody truly into following Old 66 could probably spend a whole summer doing it. As a practical matter though I suspect most of us just sample as much of it as we can find the time for.

A vast body of road guides and history exist for Old 66 so be prepared to enjoy many hours of reading before you ever even think of heading on out.

    Good traveling.
  • Lots of folks do. On my bucket list, along with the old Lincoln Highway. Good luck and safe travels!
  • We love Grand Canyon Railway RV park in Williams, AZ. Great small town on Rt. 66 with lots to do in the area.

Rt. 66 from Kingman thru Oatman isn't recommended for RV's. Longest remaining stretch from Ash Fork to Kingman is a nice drive although Kingman isn't exactly a tourist stop!
  • Found this as well

Will be interesting research, even if I can't make the trip for awhile.
