Route 83

We are looking at taking route 83 from Minot, ND to Abilene, TX in the beginning of November. Has any one tried that trip at that time of year? We are pulling a 35ft 5th wheel with a 2008 GMC 2500HD Diesel.

  • Not very often is there any snow in ND in November. We usually leave 20 miles north of Minot between 1 and 15 of nov. have not had any snow or ice when leaving last 5 years, not saying it cant happen.83 is a major north south route so i wouldnt worry about .
  • Road is fine.

Mind you, there are parts of US 83 in northern Texas where facilities are few and far in between. Unfortunately, Canadian down towards Abilene is the major "dead" zone. Canadian has an RV park in town, but other than a county run rv park on the Salt Fork of the Red River near Wheeler, Texas, not much until you get to Abilene. The county park mentioned is a nice spot for any overnight stay. We haven't been there in years, but it was very nice when we were there.

Watch your weather forecasts for sure, and try to time your run south between storms. I've traveled that route in late December from Texas to North Dakota and there can be times where there's plenty of snow to go around.
  • Many trips on 83. It is a good mostly 2 lane highway passing thru many small towns that just slow you down for a few minutes. You might have a cattle truck in a hurry to get to a Kansas packing house and wanting to pass. Other than that it's a nice ride. As far as weather you never know but I bet it will be ok that time of year.
  • From the weather history of Minot, if you can do it before the 10th you're probably ok.
  • I'm hoping it's a good route since I am planning on taking US-83 from Vivian, SD to Liberal, KS. It looks pretty flat but I guess I'll (we'll) wait for a reply or two from someone with actual drive time on US-83. I'll be on it early October and don't expect any snow but November may be a different story.

    Safe travels.
