Route 90 through Cleveland

We are leaving on a trip from Detroit, Michigan to Watkins Glen, NY on Tuesday. The GPS is directing me to take Rt. 90 through Cleveland. It has been several years since I went that way, but as I recall there were signs on the freeway as we approached the Cleveland vicinity directing trucks to follow a "Truck Route". To be safe, in case of low bridges, etc., we took that route and it took us right through the heart of downtown Cleveland. I hate driving the motor home in downtown traffic. Does anyone know if there is an alternate way to get through there without going through downtown? Maybe things have changed, or maybe I was lost, but I'd rather not go through there if I can avoid it without going way out of the way. We are driving a 36' class A towing a car.

Thank you ahead in advance for any advice.

  • Just got back from there. The Google route is all good and you will have very little construction to worry about. Had a great trip! Enjoy! Drove there from just north of Detroit last week.

With this years drought, there is barely any water going over the Falls.....
  • Matt,

I just followed the route you suggested on Google Earth. I think I'll take that route.

    Thanks much. :)
  • Yes, we went to Watkins Glen state park a few years ago and we are going back. The waterfalls there are beautiful!
  • I'm assuming you're going to Watkins Glen St Park. Fantastic hike. Also consider nearby Corning Glass Museum in Corning and the Glenn Curtis Museum in Hammondsport. Also visit some wineries to the north.
  • You aren't leaving from Detroit, you are leaving from New Boston. So run I-275 to I-75 just watch out that you don't get into the "Exit Only" lane at Telegraph. Run south to Alexis Road, the first exit in Ohio and use GasBuddy to figure out who's fuel you buy. Get back on I-75 south and watch for I-280. You have to pay attention because they are doing some construction. Get off I-280 at Exit 6 and pick up OH-51 for a FEW blocks. Watch for OH579 on the left at a light. Take 579 though Williston Do Not Speed (it is 35 in town), until 579 meets OH-2. 2 is a good road and in less than 10 miles it will be limited access all the way to Elyria. There, it will dump you right onto I-90. Run I-90 right through Cleveland. Yes, it is a city and the people are all crazy. Just drive a speed you are comfortable and let them go around you... There are 3 interchanges in Cleveland, but they are well signed - Just stay with I-90 EAST. In a dozen more miles you will be out of Cleveland.. About Euclid, there is another interchange, STAY WITH I-90 EAST.
There is a Loves at Exit 241. Buy more fuel there whether you want to or not. You get to save .020/gal.
After Erie, watch for I-86. You can stay with I-86 to Painted Post and save the NY Toll$.
We go this way a lot, but I haven't actually been to the Glen is many a year...

  • Thank you for your advice. I guess I'll just keep away from rush hour and bite the bullet and go through Cleveland.
  • the easiest the Toll Road.. I 80.... Money...
or I 271 around Cleveland . more miles.. Rush hour can be a problem.
I 90 rush hour is always a problem.
  • There is not low clearances on I-90 thru Cleveland. There are 2 alternate routes but will cost more in tolls, and they are 1) Stay on I-80 to I-480, then till I-271 north but you will encounter a lot of traffic on this route or 2) Stay on I-80 all the way to I-271 north. Both of these routs will add mileage and tolls. IMO there's nothing wrong with shooting straight thru Cleveland anytime after say 10AM and before 4PM.
