Route around Dallas

I am planning my trip in September that involves driving around Dallas before heading up to I-40. From I-20, this is what I'm planning:

US-69 North
US-82 West
US-287 North

Any issues with this route, or am I better doing what others seem to do and stay on I-20 and pick up 287 near Ft Worth?

Thanks,

Doug

  • We have always used the I-20 to 287 route; as recently as last January. Had a small backup. We just avoid the rush hours.
  • We have used your route several times going from Florida to Colorado/Utah. We will do exactly that the next time we head West.

    Have fun!
  • Just a suggestion. If going through Dallas is more direct, try timing you trip on Sunday morning. You will find the main highways very uncongested.
  • We also live off I-20 (25 miles North). We had always taken I-30 from Mount Pleasant to Greenville, then TX 180 to Decatur where we picked up US 287. TX 180 became more and more congested with traffic and traffic signals.

Now we go on US 271 from Mount Pleasant to Paris, TX and then follow US 82 over to US 287 near Wichita Falls. We have found this to be a much more pleasnt drive. Some interesting comments: Sherman is one of the easiest towns to drive through--almost no slow down at all. Gainsville is one of the worst towns to drive through--stop and start and limit of 35 MPH.

We enjoy eating at Muenster, a German traditional community. Also a nice little Mexican restaurant in Whitesboro. Unfortunately, a nice little RV Park in Whitesboro has recently closed. On up 287 there is The Ole Town Cotton Gin in Goodlett, TX which is a good overnigh stop.
  • I live in east Texas just off I20....
the route you noted is my preferred route heading west.

DO NOT USE 635 around north Dallas.....
  • Texas has the best back roads in the country (better than most highways) plenty wide and smooth !! I go that way 69 82 287 a lot but last Friday I had to go into Fort Worth and believe me you don't want any part of I 820 I 35w and 287 in the Ft. Worth area right now.....CONSTRUCTION and big long back ups !!!
  • That is a good option. If on 82/287 watch your speed around Esteline as it is a speed trap.

Nothing at all wrong with that route. 69 will be mostly 2 lane thru a number of small towns, but good road with little traffic. 82 will be similar.

Ordinarily I would do the I-20 to Ft Worth and pick up 287. But there is a lot of construction going on in the area of north Ft Worth that I would avoid until completed.

This is great info. Thanks for your help. :)
