Route Bridgeport CT to Liberty Harbor Marina & RV Park, NJ

Hi folks this is my first posting on this forum. I am from Australia and am touring the USA in a 29' 5th wheel. I need to go from Bridgeport, CT to Liberty Harbor Marina & RV Park, NJ via the safest route possible and ideally staying away from NYC.

Can anyone please advise a suggested route and also can I take the Garden State Parkway, I have seen some web sites saying NO and others saying yes.

HELP APPRECIATED.

  • I was just up there a few weeks ago - due to construction on the TZ, there was quite a bit of congestion and slow going for people coming out of NY, across the bridge, and then south on I-287. We were going north, which moved along just fine. This was about 3:30 to 4:00 in the afternoon, so it may be a commuter volume thing. Just something to keep in mind.
  • Avoid the Cross Bronx Expressway and the Geo Washington Bridge at all costs.

If you are doing the GSP or the NJ Turnpike, pick up an EZPass for the tolls.
  • As stated above......... get to I-287 and take the Tappan Zee bridge over the Hudson River. You can use the the Garden State Parkway and I suggest you do so. Some of the older bridges on the Parkway are arched. When the road was widened this reduced clearance in the extreme right lane under some of these bridges. You will be fine using the GSP.

    Enjoy your visit.
  • The low bridges on the Garden State are South of the exit for I-78 East. The lowest bridge I know of is at mp 135 Southbound and is marked at 12' 4" at the shoulder. The Parkway restriction is 13' 6".

I95 to I-287, over the Tappan Zee to the Garden State Parkway to I-78 East. That becomes the NJ Turnpike Extension. The campground website has directions from there. You do travel a mile or two in a crowded, city area, but it is do able.
  • CT RT95 to RT287 across Tappan Zee to GSP South to RT78E which brings you right to CG which is about 1-2m. There is shorter ways too just more highways, take GSP South to Rt80e to Rt95s to RT78e.
  • I would take I95 to I287 over the Tappan Zee Bridge to the Garden State Parkway. RVs are allowed on the Garden State Parkway. Have not been to Liberty Harbor RV, so can't advise best route to get there. I would call Liberty Harbor and ask then for a recommendation.

    Avoid the morning/evening rush hours.
