That explains why you wrote 'swimming several times'. The mapping software is probably giving you the 'shortest' route. Or if 'fastest', it isn't taking into account the waiting times.
The south loop was the first choice that came to mind. Goldstream Prov. Park is a great stop, either for hiking or camping. But it is popular. Most of this drive is divided highway, or at least 4 lane.
I'm aware of the Mill Bay ferry, but haven't taken it.
I have taken the Salt Spring ferries, but not as a through drive. Instead the island is itself a camping destination, especially the walkin sites at Ruckle Prov. Park.
