RV Parking in Anchorage

I've been to Anchorage on numerous occasions, working and vacation, but I haven't paid attention to RV parking near downtown. This year we're flying up and renting from GAH.

I've been there with a toad so I wasn't really paying attention. How close to downtown can you park?

Thanks.
  • We parked our 22' B+ in a parking lot just down from the visitor's center. As I remember, it was large enough and didn't appear to be used that much. I think it was the honor system, but it worked. We then were able to walk to the shopping district.

  • If you look here, there are some RV parking sites shown:

Well, I'm sorry. For some reason my links won't work. But if you go to the anchorage.net site, you will be able to find maps that show parking.

    Enjoy your trip.

  • Last summer, we parked in a large RV lot in the downtown area. We were able to walk to everything we wanted to see/do. I don't think you will have any trouble.
  • There are two good things about Anchorage. The Native Heritage Center, a must see, and secondly, it's only 30 minutes from Alaska. ;)
  • Anchorage is generally pretty RV friendly. We just parked our truck and trailer on the street a couple of blocks from Simon and Seafort's Grill (we were on 7th at about K St) and virtually no one else was parked near us. It was on a Sunday and we were there several hours as we were celebrating our anniversary with dinner at our favorite Anchorage restaurant. There were plenty of empty parking lots in the vicinity too, but those would undoubtedly have been full on a weekday.
  • We like to eat at a couple of places and my wife and kids love to shop downtown. Otherwise we'd be headed out of town!

    Thanks for the help!
  • We used the Walmart right on Seward Hwy, plenty of parking and Barnes and Noble is right next door for internet access. Anchorage for us a re-fueling, food stop and laundry time.

Correction on that Walmart location..."A" st and E. Benson. It was Fred Meyers Market at Seward Hwy that we had used for grocery shopping.
  • Are you talking free parking or paid parking ?

Parking in some of the downtown areas aren't much of an issue for free parking but can be a hit and miss depending what day of the week and what part of the day, but generally you can find a free parking space available or street spot.

Pay parking garages and pay parking lots are a non issue in the downtown area as they are plentiful (such as 6th avenue park and 5th avenue mall parking garages).

Although I haven't been in Anchorage in 9 years until last week's holiday weekend, I had not gone to the downtown area as I only spent 1 and a half days in Anchorage and yes I took the camper rig !....If I had wanted to roam downtown, (as far as a FREE parking spot goes, I would have found a parking street spot along 3rd Avenue near the A street bridge somewhere (east side of the intersection) or parked down in the Ship Creek area near Comfort Inn or near the railroad yard and walked around unless the area had significantly changed about the parking rules (I sure miss the place my friend's lived at on Government Hill as I always walked easily to downtown).....As there is always Diamond pay parking lots, across from the Alaska Railroad headquarters on 2nd Avenue and one up the hill on 3rd Avenue just west of the A street bridge near the Anchorage Hong Kong style looking Hilton.

As mentioned, the other side of downtown (south portion) has more opportunity for free street parking like the Delaney Park corridor (9th and 10th Streets).

We used the Walmart right on Seward Hwy, plenty of parking and Barnes and Noble is right next door for internet access

This particular area in reference is actually the "midtown" area of Anchorage and is not considered downtown.....as I noticed that the midtown Walmart here is no longer open 24 hours anymore.
  • Similar to the "paid vs. free" parking question, one assumes you're looking for parking, not camping? I suspect on a weekday, parking will be onerous and /or expensive but doable.

Overnighting is a different question....but I'll assume that wasn't really your question.
  • I'll be camping just not in downtown!

Free parking is great but I have to take what I can get. I don't figure I can get into a parking garage with a 32' class C!

    Thanks for all the help.
