RV to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Myself, my DW, and another couple are planning a trip across the U.S. to the mid-upper East Coast states, starting mid-August. Each of us couples will be in our own 24 foot Class C motorhome.

How "close" can we get to an area where we can park one or both RV's so as to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island?

i.e. Should we leave one RV in a nearby RV campground and then both couples ride in one RV to visit these two attractions? Should we leave both RV's in a nearby campground and rent a car to get to these two attractions? What nearby RV campground should we use to overnight while we're visiting the Statue and the Island?

Any additional comments and recommends regarding seeing these and other attactions in the area would be appreiciated.

    If close is your criteria, check out Liberty RV park. It is close, water taxi close. It is close, not necessarily super nice but it is close.

    X2 and will save big fees and hassles of parking. Not that Liberty park is cheap but puts you easy access to all that area.

    I agree with Liberty Harbor. It's basically a pricey (by campground standards, not by NYC standards) fenced parking lot with security, electric hookups, bathrooms, and a dump station...but it is super convenient by train or ferry (both a short walk) to local sightseeing. The campground also has bus tour info.

    It's next to commuter parking lots for the ferry. It was fun to watch all the business people in suits bustling off to work and back, while we sat at our little outdoor table and camp chairs enjoying life.

    We took the train in to visit the new 9/11 Museum - hop on, a few minutes beneath the river and you arrive at the station for the museum.

    You actually can see the Statue of Liberty from the RV park, which also has a fabulous view of Manhattan.

    Ditto On Liberty. . . Get a ez pass for tolls. alot of toll roads here on the east coast. Saves time

    Definitely Liberty Harbor. You don't even want to think about taking an RV into Lower Manhattan.

    Everyone stays at Liberty Harbor (except me, it seems).

    Someone mentioned to me that there is parking available at Liberty State Park in NJ and that you can take the ferry from there to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Anyone with more/better info?

    Thanks for all your inputs so far! They're a big help.

    That Liberty RV park sounds like the answer to having convenient access to the Statue and Ellis, while being able to be "camping" with the RV when not sight-seeing.

    X2 on GMandJM's question about parking at Liberty State Park. If there's parking there, can a 24 foot Class C fit?

    We don't tow, so public transportation or car rental is what we'll have to do.

    For the Liberty State Park departure location, the web site for Statue Cruises (www.statuecruises.com) says "Ample parking for cars and buses. Easy access from the New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 78." Doesn't say how big, how much it costs, if it's secure or if you need to reserve.

    Maybe give them a call: 1-877-LADYTIX (877-523-9849).

    Keep in mind I haven't done this...just passing along the info. Please let us know what, if anything, you find out.

    We'll be heading there later this year and staying in the Hudson River area (Black Bear; Floida, NY). A tour company (arranged through the CG) will take us into the city, hit all the big spots including Ellis Island and SoL, and deliver us back to the CG in the evening. A bit pricey but we felt it was worth it considering the cost of a train from White Plains, the schedules, hassles, and all else. We'll sit back and let them do the driving.

    We plan on doing the same thing staying at Black Bear CG.. But we want to visit the 911 Memorial...
