RV w Family from Las Vegas

My husband is focused on renting an RV to take our young kids on a camping trip in either Spring or Summer. Looking for any recommendations on stops, routes, etc. We are looking to go somewhere more forresty than Zion and such. Any feedback or recommendations would be so appreciated!
  • I would be looking to Yellowstone or Rocky Mountain national parks.
I assume at least 2 weeks rental.
  • Look at some goods maps. There are lots of great places closer than central Oregon.
  • 395 is a great road to travel. There is the ghost town Bodie and the WWII Japanese internment camp at Manzanar. Mono Lake is an interesting sight. Bishop has Schat's bakery, a place worth a stop by itself if you are tempted by exquisite baked goods (and has an RV park directly behind it!). I have to assume you are talking about next season so you might want to go as early in spring as possible to see Death Valley. With any luck, Scotty's Castle will have reopened by next year. DO NOT visit DV in summer. It WILL NOT be fun. Fishing is good at Topaz Lake. Be wary about the passes that go west from 395 into central CA. Some are NOT RV friendly. Inquire locally!
  • How old are the kids? How much time do you have? What sorts of things do you like to do? The answers to those questions will influence our recommendations.

Having done a lot of traveling with small kids, I would recommend keeping the drive time to a minimum. I think that the Bishop Creek area might be a good fit -- the campgrounds are at around 9000 feet, there is great fishing and hiking, and it is about 300 miles from home (95 to 266 to 168 to 395).

You will find that RVing with kids is a lot of work and is a ton of fun. We never got to do it -- our kids were grown by the time we discovered RVing, unfortunately. But our friends who have camped with kids tell us it is great.
  • Yes, Don, Lakeview, Oregon is a great place to vacation. Not a bunch of trees but try Junipers RV Resort, ten miles east of Lakeview.

You don't need to travel far. Go to the Eastern Sierra along Hwy 395 in CA and you will find many campgrounds and fishing spots. Our favorite is the June Lake area. You can take Hwy 120 nearby and visit Yosemite. You may also want to travel further north and hit Lake Tahoe. Good luck!
  • From LV head north 395 to Lakeview, 31NW to LaPine. LaPine state park is a nice wooded park with lots to see and do in the area. The park itself has 14 miles of hiking biking trails, river access, and full hookups for those evening hot showers. From here you could head west to the coast. Visit the beach from Lincoln City south to maybe mid Californis, head east home. Shoudl make a good two three weeks worth of fun.
